I have a Hohner marine band C Harp that I got as part of a sale on ebay, and the reeds have a problem I've never seen before. There is a significant gap between the tip of the reed and the tip of the reed plate. It looks like the reeds are a little too short. I'm sure this is an issue that customizers have to deal with from time to time, and was wondering how I should tackle it. Please give suggestions if you are knowledgable about this topic. Thanks.

Just guessing but could the length be built up with solder?

How many nails are there in total between the reed on the draw plate? Two? How many on either side? If it's either one or three, then according to Richard Sleigh's Marine Band Field Spotters guide, it's one of the worst Marine Band's ever made. It may not be possible to get a good result, if that's the case.

I think one way to fix a short reed it is to take the reed off and make its hole longer, then put it back further up on the reedplate. I am talking about the hole on the reed, not the reedplate. See this image:

I thik Rick Epping posted a technique to shorten the reedplate that utilized a solder plug held in place by a couple of small semi circular holes/keyways drilled in the corners of the slot .

Thanks for the link! I don't think that'll work for this though, the gap isn't big enough. @ arzajac- that method would probably work, but would involve converting the entire harp fr4om rivets to screws. That's way too much effort for a maybe POS harp.

Can you emboss the end of the reed hole?

Sammyharp: I can't find the reference to where I read that, but I remember that it was put back with a rivet - not converted to screw.

That seems like a harp that would look great in the scrap heap--the parts might come in handy someday. . .

Definitely feels pretty leaky, even after embossing.
