This may be old news to many of you, but I was surprised to learn that harmonicas are used to treat people with chronic respiratory conditions such as emphysema.
It trains people to use their diaphragm in a fun way.
I took one to my elderly relative who had a broken hip, not to mention emphysema, and he found it helps a lot. The nurse said to concentrate on getting strong long tones rather than playing 'tunes' though.
Just another reason to play the harp!

Possibly something i left out, any style of Harmonica Playing is going to strengthen your Lung Capacity and Help breath control in your every day liveing :)
not only is harmonica playing good for people with respretory Problems allso with mobilty Problems, Breathing in and out Playing Harp Builds Oxegen levels in your Blood stream, you don't even have to move this is very Benificial for the elderly Persons:)
Allso Obese Persons Who are trying to get fit i was 140 Kgs when i came out of the Pig Pen on oxygen 24/7 for a good 12 months:(
I rode a Bike trainer in my Bedroom and Played harp ever other minute untill i got of Oxygen and could walk around the Block :)
Harmonica Playing Exersize and a good diet has got me of Oxygen and my Heath much much better:)
Every chance i get i play Harp fact is the Old Man is over for T just waiting for him to piss of Home, and its time for some Harmonica and Bottle Neck slide fun time going down:) ---------- 50 Years Old 95Kg's and Shrinking:)

Wow! Sounds like you've made great progress:) I guess you know much better than my theoretical knowledge. Great testimony to the power of the harp!

Yeah, harp helps my asthma. It's one of the reasons I picked it up. It's also a good instrument choice for people with carpal tunnel or arthritis, since you don't have to do all sorts of fine finger work.
