Hi

Everyone has their own preference to what harp they like but....

Does anyone out there think that certain brands make better low harps and others better higher harps?

I have almost a full set of Marine Bands. Everying 'B' or above I love, everything below a 'B' I don't think play very well. However I have an 'A' and a 'G' Lee Oscar which are great.

Coincidence? I don't know.

I'm wanting to get a low 'G' next. Anyone else experienced this?

I don't think the problem with Marine Bands is with any particular key.

My very first Marine Band in A was leaky. Once I learned how to properly sand the comb flat, it's one of the best playing harps I own.

I like the tone of the Marine Band especially in the lower keys. I just ordered a low-D.

Seydel makes a lot of really low harps, lower than anyone else. I know Lee Oskar lower keys have wider combs so the reeds won't rattle. The Bb has a regular comb and the G has a fat comb. I'm not sure about the A and Ab. I've heard good things about the Bushman harps for playing low. I've heard anecdotal evidence that Golden Melodies are a little prone to rattling on the lower keys.

Golden Melodies just go down to a "G". I personally had trouble with the 2-hole bent down a step on the low harps for a while, but as I progressed the rattle went away. I'm still a GM guy.

I did want a low F and after research settled on the Suzuki Promaster. It was a little stiff at first but after breaking in and gapping I really like it. Rich, full tone and it overblows nicely on 4,5,6. The overdraws actually come easier than on my GMs. Not sure if it is the harps or that lower keys overdraw easier.

I would like to have a low D and E. I'm sure many of those songs in E that we use an A harp for would be great in 1st position. Top end first position blues is always fun on lower harps.
