Hi folks

Though I'm a dedicated student of the diatonic, I'm investing in a single Chromatic as a back-up, to tackle the really tricky tunes while I perfect a full, Howard-Levy-like command of the diatonic. (Yeah, I'll keep you posted on that.)

I also just want to mess around with the thing, see if I'm any damned good at it.

To sum up: I'm looking for an affordable, reliable solution that won't break the bank or break at all, for that matter. The Special 20 of chromatic harmonicas, if you will.

Can you recommend a model for this young man?

i risk some ridicule here for saying this but a hohner chrometta 12 is a good fool-around chromatic. at just over a hunnerd bucks one could do worse. the chinese made chromatics i've tried were really terrible.
on the other hand hering makes good chromatics, the 5148 and 7148 series, 12 holes, well put together and nicely tuned.
my next foray into chromatic will be a suzuki scx model i think.
depends on what you want to do with it and a price cap.

I agree with Zack Elwood, I bought a cheap Belcanto one from ebay a few years ago and it works great. It was properly valved and came in a very nice case. I have just messed around with the Chrom and this was a good cheap way to see if it was something I'd like to persue...which it isn't at the moment!!

The one thing I really like doing on it is octaves but you have to cover more holes to get them. Sounds good though.

I have three swans, they are quiet and a bit leaky, but plyable. Nice for quiet practice.

.....The Hohnica Educator 10 and Seydel Chromatic Standards aren't terrible. They are valveless so they can take a little less maintenance.....and more weather.

jbone...
Is there a reliable distributor for Herring here in the states.
There is a chromatic they make that I want. It's like a 270.
(I got one of their big 64 types last year and it is murder-r-r-r-r-r-r--r-r...just plays great)
Since then the other chromatics have seemed to just vanish from the dealers.
Any help, por favor??

I have surfed for harmonicas at this outfit, but I have not ordered anything from them yet.

I have ordered a Hohner 270 deluxe. It is an updated model of the 270 with screws instead of nails and round holes instead of square. It is still $186 bucks and no small investment, but with a harp this complex, I want to be able to get inside it easily. I didn't want to get something that I would regret later, but I didn't want to get to far from a classic like the 270.

joelee, coast2coast lists 4 herings. i use a 48 instead of a 64 but they do have both. the joint zack posted above also has herings. i have no idea who if anyone is currently in stock on the herings since it's been a couple of years since i bought one. but i used coast2coast when i did. they are worth a call as it has always been a good buying experience when i've dealt with them.
harp express appears to have more choices and better prices but i'd make sure and check availability.

one of the first hering 5148's i got was with a less than reputable dealer. i prepaid and waited, and after 3 months i called to cancel the order. i was told it was canceled and they apologized for the wait- a shipment was delayed from brazil. 3 weeks later i get the 5148, at a time when i could not afford the $$ going out of checking. that guy is out of business now but i'd definitely check out a potential vendor before ordering.

maybe this is the wrong thread to ask in but i'm curious about suzuki scx chromatics. anyone? i like their diatonics of which i have several models.
