I thought I would put in a good word for Sam Ash-unlike many music stores who will not take back a harp that has been opened, Sam Ash has been very good to me.
In the first case, I brought a Bushman Delta Frost home, opened it and the 3
draw was completely dead-nary a squeak. I called the store and they insisted I bring it back for a new one, no sweat.
Today I went in for their Labor Day sale, but none of the harps were on sale. As I was leaving the manager walked past and asked if I was finding everything OK. I said I hoped to see some harps on sale. He said they weren't, but he would take 10% off any harp I wanted. So I chose a Marine Band in A. The girl behind the counter let me take it out and run it through the tester, and it sounded pretty lame to both of us. I played a 1-4 blow on it and was horribly flat. She she got another one out of the blister pack, it sounded good and I was on my way.
Great service! (Really, why should the customer get stuck with a bum harp?)

i have always believed that if somebody goes to a music store, with their own harp, and proves he can play (not just a wailer), they should be able to test a harp with the understanding that if it sucks they dont need to buy it.

I ask myself that almost daily...

It's all about germs. And the law about germs makes it look like music stores can't take back a harp. They can. They just can't resell it. The problem is that music stores can pretend the law says they can't take it back. If they can say no one can exchange harps and you believe them you won't go anywhere else. Actually, the blister packs may help. People may be more willing to shop at a store with a return policy for instruments that get slobbered on if the ones that have already been slobbered on are clearly no longer sealed in plastic.

Joe, as long as they send the broken ones back you're fine. Someone commented once that they went to a store where the owner would step on the returned harmonica, crushing it, to make it clear there would be no funny business going on. A blister pack essentially does the same thing, as long as you only buy harps in blister packs.

@Joe L-the manager said he would simply send my returned harp back to Bushman. But I agree having the harps in blister packs would give everyone peace of mind.

@eharp--Yeah, I've always believed that you people who can really play should be able to walk into any music store and slobber on any harp you want to--us mere "wailers" are totally OK with getting the ones that are clean! (hee hee hee)

Are the ones in the bubble clean? I don't know--seems like some guy might just be grabbing a random harp while he eats lunch to practice a couple of licks he got off the YT--Hey, Germanharpist! Where do you work?? ;)

Maybe I should do a good cleaning on every harp I buy--just to be sure. . .
