She sounds more like Joan Osbourne or Melisa Etheridge than 'Cindy Lauper'. It's interesting to see how her singing style has developed over the years.
@nacoran: Easy, All you need is a Cruncher and BlowsMeAway wood mic. NOT! (but at least then you know it is POSSIBLE and you can shoot for it.)
@bluemoose - agree completely. Shameful.
What was really interesting to me about this is, having heard the record, Cyndi Lauper was bluesier on this than ANYTHING on the CD. I don't MIND her letting her pop persona through - she can do whatever she wants - but I think in the process of touring over the last couple of months she has really embraced the blues in a new way. ---------- /Greg
I used to go watch Jonny Lang at the local bowling alley here in MN when he was "Kid Jonny Lang". He was a decent guitar player but his forte has always been his amazing voice.
yes Cyndi seems to be settling in. The first vid or two I heard had me cringing now and then. The last couple have been an eye-opener. Real blues feel, timing, inflection. Wow. Hope she does another CD that will capture that. From reading the interviews...the girl's got the blues bug bad.
I dismissed Lauper as a fad singer long ago. Then after she had been out of sight for a while she showed up on TV singing with Patti LaBelle. Kept right up with her, no easy feat. She does have quite a voice. A shame Leno did not stop and shake Charlie's hand nor did Lauper gesture to him. I noticed Leno's female guest did go right to Charlie on her way over to the other two. At least he was a front man. And an I Love Clarksdale sticker on his hard case.
Saw Cyndi and Charlie at the Pacific National Ex last night. (She was a red head this time :) Charlie (and all the band) did get proper introductions (and respect!). what a lineup. A lot of the crowd was expecting the old stuff but were patient and appreciative of her Memphis Blues stuff. Charlie got lots of playing time and was awesome. He'll be here in October at the Yale. Can't wait for that. She final did a couple old tunes in the extended encore but with some blues sensibility thrown in and the crowd went crazy.
Lang seemed to be playing cross purposes to Charlie, when it is his solo, that is fine, but it seemed like Charlie was trying to play with him and accentuate, and getting nothing back but having his fill lines walked over.
Lauper's voice was much better in this one than the recording of her singing to Trump.
