I haven't approved a member named liu. I have no idea how a spambot by that name suddenly showed up here.

All applications need to be manually approved by me. Perhaps liu snuck in a few days ago when for 18 hours I had a no-approval-needed policy.

I'd urge the moderators not to waste time deleting all liu's posts.

I think there is a clear pattern with the way the spam looks. Notice that the spammer uses multiple links with interlocked with pop culture references, among other things. Someone with extensive web development knowledge (like me) could conceivably write an algorithm that scores posts for spam, anything that scores higher than a prescribed amount goes through a human test.

If you guys have access to the FTP information for the site, I could write the filter in, just for the sake of cleaning up the forum. I've had to do it several times on my own website and clients' websites. That would allow a captcha-free and hopefully spam-free forum environment.

It would certainly make the lives of the moderators easier.

Ok, when I logged in I now have the option to check a bunch of posts to delete in a thread, kind of like a deleting extra emails (before I had to click a delete button next to the edit button.) This is a great improvement, but, as with all great improvements, it only makes me want more. I don't know how hard this would be, but if there was a way to display comments chronologically in one list instead of a bunch of threads all the spam would be lumped virtually all together. (Great job whoever was on call when it hit. I only found a handful for me to zap. Jonlaing, is that what you are talking about?

I'd think another way to filter would be spotting multiple posts with links posted quickly together.

A while back I noticed we had a few threads that mentioned gxld plating. Every time someone said wxw in the thread we'd get WxW Gxld spam. (I changed o's to x's so I didn't spite the angry spam dogs.) I'm guessing their bot was searching for mentions of those words and targeting sites where it turned up. In their own creepy way they were trying to be helpful by bringing us what they thought we wanted.

I don't know what the backend looks like for moderators, but if you guys are using an SQL database to host the forum (which is more than likely) you can display posts in any damn way you please, you just have to have someone who knows how to write the code. It's really not hard.

I think another great feature would be allowing regular users to act as anti-spammers. Youtube and other popular sites do things like that where next to each post a user has the option to "flag as spam" in which case a moderator is notified and the post is made invisible until a moderator can confirm whether or not the post is indeed spam. That way we wouldn't have to make a new thread every time a bot hits.

Like I said, if I could get onto the FTP and into the backend that the moderators see, I could conceivably build in anti-spam algorithms and more effective spam cleaning methods.

I've learned a lot from this forum and I would be more than happy to do my part in improving the experience gratis.

Taint me, Buddha. I only like Spam if it's fried with an over-easy egg on top. I was pointing the finger at you-probably still bitter about your little purple football team being bested by the Saints. Could be Mike though...He's got that stereotypical 'Ginger Rage' thing going for him if he chooses to use it. I knew I should have offered to sell him my HarpAttack or my Bullet so he could have 'that' tone he seeks.

Good morning, by the way.

Nothing unites people like a common enemy. Spammers are about as common as you can get.
