So, I go to the Sunday jam at 4PM. Was out late ( 3AM ) gigging at a local hole called the "Frog and Peach". Young crowd, and we worked up the college kids to a frenzy. One Polly-Dolly gave the band a show going Commando in a short skirt. Our Italian sax player held his sax awkwardly the rest of the night.

Anyway, I was tired the next day, but went to the jam anyway.

Gave Raven a rest, and put "Blanche" the Noble Victor / Ampeg Rocket to work. Sounded great.
Then, another harper arrived and played thru a house Blues Jr. Tone kinda thin, but the guy HAS chops.

After an hour of setting down, I went to join in and there was this hi-pitched feedback.
After playing earlier, I thought it couldn't be me, but it WAS !
I stopped and broke down, leaving early.

In checking things out at home today, I found that one of the power tubes ( Raytheon 6V6GTY JAN ) had turned microphonic.

OUCH!

At least I have replacements

Great, I finally figure out what you're saying Nasty, and then you started spouting electronics and model numbers and I'm lost again. :)

Another reason to use a volume control at your mic. It really CAN be difficult to hear/know who is feeding back on stage. If you have a volume control, you just turn it down. If the feedback stops, it was you. If it doesn't, it wasn't.

Hopefully, that's the worst thing that ever happens to you. I've had all sorts of similar things happen to me.

For example, this past week, I went to a jam. The host is a harp player and had a reissue Bassman. Three of the four inputs on his amp are less than operational. He has a JT30 with a bad volume pot.

I decided to try my newly "ultimatized" 545. I looked at the volume control on the amp. It was set at 7. I thought the harp player must have retubed his amp with 12AU7's. I plugged in and flipped the standby switch and was greeted with god awful feedback. I immediately turned off the volume control on the mic.

I turned the volume on the amp to 4 and turned up the volume control on the mic. After doing the same thing with the volume control on the amp at 2 with the same results, I decided to turn the volume control on the amp completely off and slowly bring it up.

I was able to turn the amp up to 1. It sounded great at that volume and the Ultimate mic sounded excellent. It turned out all of the tubes were original and the owner's JT30 is dying.

Stuff happens. Don't sweat it. You're probably the only one that'll remember it.

Joe - LOL!

I can't tell you how many customers tell me how surprised they are at how loud (and of course therefore feedbacky) their new mic is. The answer is always one of two:

1) They WERE using a high-Z XLR cable with a Low-Z mic
2) They WERE using a mic with a dying crystal.

Oh no, the worst that ever happened to me was I was doing this long, dramatic solo...and bent back to give this extended 3-draw bend. Right as I hit the 1&1/2 bend, the reed broke off and lodged in the back of my throat.
I immediately started gagging and cavorting like Joe Cocker. Everyone thought it was part of the act. I'm dying.

Must have swallowed the reed and dissolved with digestive acid.

PS : replaced the bad tube with a nice RCA JAN greyglass 6V6GTY. Sounds fine now.

Joe_L : I don't like playing thru rigs that I don't know. So much of the time something is funky like that.
I have a good friend (harper) that has an Earth Sound Resources 2X12 with FOUR 6L6GT power tubes and a SS pre-amp. He makes it sound good with his gear. I sound terrible with my mic&cable.

Greg - I didn't check his cable. By the way, that mic is killer!

LittleJoe - How else would you get to know them?

I love playing through other people's gear. It's a great way to try new stuff without shelling out the long green stuff. It helps you to learn what you do and don't like in equipment.

I know a lot of people loathe Blues jams, but I've had the chance to play through a lot of different gear at Blues jams. It's helped me to accumulate some very nice gear with a minimal amount of "trying and buying".

I know what equipment I would like to own and what I would never consider buying. Both lists contain surprises to most harp players.

I've got a ton of those embarrassing stories. After a while, they stop bugging you.
