Damn. OK, it's 6:27 AM on Saturday and I'm changing the forum registration policy back to what it was.
Apparently spambots can solve the captcha riddle.

It look like just this particular captcha is susceptible. I looked up how captchas are cracked by spambots, and conceivably you could make one that is uncrackable.
Also, the spambots can make thousands of requests to the captcha until they get it right. you could also add functionality that says "if you get it wrong more than 10 times, you're brought back to the home page." I think even the worst captcha readers on this forum could get it in 10 tries.
There are other forms of malicious captcha cracking, but I doubt they're the culprit here. The captcha used on this site is just too easy to read for machines.

even better, how about functionality that says "if you get it wrong more than 10 times, we launch a cruise missile and obliterate your house."
ok, maybe a bit extreme. i just hate spammers.

Garry, the only problem I see with that is that some spam terrorist would spoof someone's address and we'd be launching at friendlies.
