i can think of only one or two harp players who ever played the white house.
1) jerry portnoy -when he was w/ muddy, played for jimmy carter.
2) not sure, but since willie nelson played for bill clinton, i think mickey raphael would have been there too.
any others?---------- MP hibachi cook for the yakuza doctor of semiotics superhero emeritus

Abraham Lincoln played harmonica, or so I've read.
"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe and playing my Hohner harmonica;" is a quote that's associated with him. But was Hohner the namebrand in Lincoln's day? Could have been an ad campaign.

Well from a quick web search I see the following,
Larry Adler played at the white house for Truman but also Truman accompanied him on keyboards at the time and there are two guys who have also played in the white house, but they seemed to be living there at the time.
"Both Calvin Coolidge and Woodrow Wilson are said to have been accomplished harmonica players who played often while they resided in the White House."

Hohner wasn't even around while Lincoln was alive I thought...And, Truman was HIS piano player or just played that day with him?

Zack, according to the intenet sources Truman played with him that one time only and only for one song.
according to the biography notes....
"When Adler played at the White House, President Harry Truman sat down at the piano to accompany ``The Missouri Waltz.´´ When the music ended, Adler cracked: ``You´re a hell of a better president than you are a pianist.´´

Zack, are they saying false that Lincoln played harp or that he played a hohner? I had heard that he carried a harmonica but without reference to brand.
It just looks feasible that it could have been a hohner because they were in factory production during his presidency. ---------- Shane

“Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica.” – Abraham Lincoln (from a letter written by Lincoln during his presidency to the head of the Hohner Harmonica Company in Germany).

I've seen photos of Kenny Loggins presenting Bill Clinton with a harmonica-don't know if this was in the White House or not, though. ----------

"... smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica.” – Abraham Lincoln
Sweet Hemp???? Hmmmm..... Wonder what was really in that pipe? Was it customary to smoke hemp as a tobacco or was it pot? For a president I assume that this is merely tobacco however, it is a curious remark. Anyone? ---------- "Keep it in your mouth" - XHarp

Yes, the founding fathers and early American settlers smoked pot.
Hemp was the major moneymaking export back then, along with tobacco. ---------- Shane
