People say in another thread why they like the Bb most of all (and Adam and Jason by default). Perhaps it would be more interesting if they said instead why the A harp doesn't quite do it for them?

I play with a horn section, they are actual quite capable of playing in natural keys. You just have to tell them who's the boss ;-)

Bb transposing is the same as trumpet, clarinet, soprano & tenor sax. 1 hole overblow is easier than A, while 9-10 holes are not as high, as on C harp. Great for bunch of jazz tunes for original keys, playing with piano, saxes, trumpet, clarinet. Not so useful for playing with guitarists. Just my favorite key.

Bb in 3rd is very useful and good sounding. also in 2nd. i use Bb quite a bit in 3rd since nobody else does around here. this helps define my sound.

i do us A quite a bit as well but to me this is apples and oranges. both have their pluses.

The thumb - no question. Grasping branches -> tool-use -> brain development. Best thing that ever happened to us.

next!

Bb in third is a good suggestion.

The way others talk about horns makes me suppose guitarists are extinct. Maybe we could find some guitarist DNA in a mosquito and set up farms to breed them.

We could call it Bonamassic Park.

"Bb transposing is the same as trumpet, clarinet, soprano & tenor sax."

This needs clarification. These instruments are transposing instruments in the key of Bb. When the band is playing in Bb these instruments are actually playing in C, that is why it is a good key for horns.

Harmonica is a concert pitch instrument. Meaning when we play a Bb it is a Bb on a piano or guitar.

If you really wanna bake your noodle then ponder this... In second position a Bb harp is for the key of F. On a Tenor sax the key of F is really G (still a great key for sax). So for a Tenor Sax to play in C (easiest key), then the band needs to play in Bb which you really need an Eb harp to play second position.

you could play a Bb chromatic as if it was a standard C chrom to go along with horns if your always playing with them.
Or a half valved diatonic or standard if you overblow and overdraw. The principle remains the same.

Has anyone really done that before?

I always consider all harmonicas except C as transposing instruments. If I play 4 blow with Bb harp I think it's C and I transpose music for harmonica. I actually know concert layouts for common keys good, but prefer to read music transposed for C harmonica.

@boris - I understand what you mean and why you may use that thought process (it is easier than learning it 12 different ways). I just wanted to clarify that horns in Bb actually transpose up a whole step all the time.

@nacoran - I'm working on it! Hopefully will have some choice clips up soon.
