I want an amp.

Preferably a tube amp.

Living in Northern Ireland.

Budget of £200.00

Want to play live with it lined out - I really only play small venues, bars etc but i'm fed up with being directly lined into the PA.

Any advice?

Hi Bro for what you are asking and the buget you are working with, Bro it's a fair bet there is nothing on the market that will suit your needs,

May be check out Ebay search, vintage guitar amps
or Harp amps small 5 watt amps are going for USA $300
up, you will have to mic the amp up, Adam is a big Fan of Small amps Mic'ed up,

or there is the ever faithful Epiphone VJ if you do get a Epiphone VJ check out Revloveramps.com
for the best up grad kit on the market for the VJ:)
---------
for $200
there ain't much out there
Bro Cheers:)

Shane I use a Fender champion 600 which you can get for about £120.Excellent little amp and sounds great with any of the mics I use. I have also played through the Epiphone and it sounds just as good but if you want an amp where you don't need to do mods to I would recommend the fender. Can be used as a line out too.

Check out Thommann website too. You can pic up a Harley Benton GA5 for under £100 and the GA15 for just over £100 and it comes with tone control.

Wheezer did a review of these amps in another thread.

Yeah I checked it out before Nasty when you posted that link before but to be honest I'm very happy with the tone I get from my stock Fender 600. I have changed the preamp tube but went back to the original 12AX7 as I liked it better.

I think the only person who hears any difference in a lot of amps is the player as most listeners couldn't tell the difference. The only reason for changing the preamp tube was to stop feedback but I got round that by using a little Shaker dynamic mic which I can turn all the way up with no feedback.

But again this is one of these personal taste things and what I like someone else probably won't but that's what makes life interesting ...difference, and thank goodness for it.

I'll be honest and say that when I first started playing seriously I was more interested in gear than actual playing and it was only after listening to myself recorded that I realised that learning to play better was more important than any gear. If you get that right then you can play through anything.

I'd be happy to play through any of the small amps quoted above and i even have an old SS amp that to me sounds good too.

However I don't think you ever lose the gear bug. If I had a bit more spare cash I know I'd have a garage filled with even more amps and mics than I have now!

do you guys across the pond not have the creeping volume disease on your stages? most smaller amps- single speaker, 25 watts or less, just won't keep up with what the typical band is doing here in the states. usually things start out pretty good, but by the second or third set the drummer is hitting harder, the bassist is using all 900 watts of his bass rig, and the guitars are struggling to damage yet another room full of eardrums.

this is not always the case but a lot of times it's just the norm with a band.

i have a vintage silvertone 1482, 25w, single 12, and it's a wonderful amp when the volume is reasonable. but for paying gigs i get the bassman 4x10 out.

i have played through a vj head mated with a 2x10 cab that was pretty good. and i have a friend who put an 8 and a 10 in a gibson small amp and it cuts through nice but i'm not sure which one he has.

the other option is to run a small amp and have it miced to the p.a., but to me unless you can hear your amp on stage it's wasted effort. i use an amp both for good tone and so i can hear myself on stage. setting the amp up high is an option too, get it closer to your ears. not always possible.

I usually have to mic the champion 600 up but have played it in a smaller venue unmiced and it was fine although everyone was very good at not blasting the volume.

I use the amp as a monitor on stage when miced-up.

Shane, where do you play in Northern Ireland? Do you go or are you in a band?

NOD, after watching one of your youtube videos I decided to take a chance on buying an untested bullet mic.

I haven't received the mic yet so I don't know if it works or if it was a good buy, but it was only $73 plus postage.

Thanks for advice so far guys.

I live in Coleraine but study in Belfast quite a bit. play here and there with a (somewhat guitar heavy) blues band but haven't been playing live as much recently.

@ Drbeastie - what's the sting on the Champ 600?
