Even it's not directed at someone on this forum specifically, it doesn't make a racist comment any less offensive or hurtful. Racist comments help spread racism and make certain people feel like they're second class citizens. That's why it's a big deal, even if the comment isn't being directed at you personally.

Let me give an example. Growing up (and I'm sure you heard this frequently as well) I would constantly hear kids, and adults as well, refer to things they didn't like as "gay". And they'd insult people by calling them "faggots". Now when someone says "oh that movie was so f***ing gay" they obviously aren't saying that the movie is litterally homosexual. So some people may not see what the big deal is. Well the problem is that by doing this they're indirectly associating being gay with something extremely negative. And when kids grow up constantly hearing that type of thing they do in fact associate being gay as a terrible thing (and trust me this is how many kids, consiously or subconsiously, interpret this kind of offensive language, especially young gay kids). So something that may not seem like a big deal does in fact spread bigotry, and makes some people feel like they're second class citizens, and that's a big problem. So when I hear people make racist/bigotted comments, even if it's not directed at me, it's still offensive, and I know it has a much bigger impact than just insulting one person. That's why I think people should say something when they hear that kind of thing, it has nothing to do with being overly sensiitive.

when I was a kid, nearly every weekend, I would help my father repaint the garage.

I never understood why until years later my dad revealed that idiots would spray paint GOOK LOVER all over the garage.

One of my dad's friends was pissed about it too because he was married to a vietnamese woman as well.

Zack, do you think it was wrong for my dad's friend to be offended or not?

Ryan, I'd like to say something about the gay thing. Gay means happy, so does this mean when I'm feeling gay I am referencing also being homosexual? Or, if someone is gay, does that reference them to also being happy? In my opinion, gay can mean stupid because gay means homosexual, but gay originally meant happy, so it's kind of hypocritical to not allow it for another purpose. If I say gay I don't intend nor imply homosexuality, and if someone takes it in that way I'm sorry but it's a word that has multiple meanings and today's youth has given it new meaning. Queer means weird, but now it also means gay. See what I mean? Now, I'm not saying go around using racial slurs, I'm just saying that word has other usages.

So, I want to make my view clear: I do NOT support racist comments. If anyone I know (or just anyone in general) uses a racial slur they won't hear from me. Now, with a group of friends cracking jokes and what not is acceptable, and we all do it. I don't want to seem like some crazy person, I'm just trying to get my point across so no one thinks I'm a racist person. There is certain situations, contexts, places, etc, that you just need to shut up (i.e. a public forum).

I'll repeat again, I found the remark offensive, but I'm not sure it was intentionally insensitive. As LR said, Sheik is the actually surname of the man he was upset with. I don't think he intended it as a pun on the proper noun (the man's name) not the title, and I'm not even sure he was away he was making a pun on the title. If I didn't have at least reasonable doubt on that I would feel differently. I got the feeling that if the man's name had been Teak, he would have been a Teaky bastard. I could be wrong. It could have been deliberate, but he says it wasn't. Short of asking him for a copy of the tenants driver's licence... he apologized as soon as it was brought to his attention.

Andrew, as to the Nazi remark, Nazi gets through around by politicians. It has become the go to description of anything socialist or fascist. Like I said, Seinfeld had the famous soup Nazi, a man who ruled his soup line with an iron fist. While I find it offensive when it's used in scaremongering it has almost become the go to word to describe people who are two rigid in their beliefs. NOD was describing his transformation from a rabid OOTB guy to someone who was willing to give it a try. Nothing in the way he used the word gave glory to the Nazis, although maybe it was a little glib. As for why Isaac's post got more attention, well, he emailed the mods. We like to be fairly hands off. Unless we see something that is absolutely cut and dry we tend to leave it alone, unless someone emails us. From a purely logistics point of view it is also more difficult to deal with offensive content in a headline than inside the thread. Mods can delete or edit posts, but the only way to deal with a problem in a Title is to delete the entire thread, including non-offending posts by people who had nothing to do with the name of the post.

Buddha, he's making two statements, one that Isaac is two easily offended, which I disagree with, but he's entitled to his opinion, and two a more general statement, which sometimes is true, although I don't believe it is in this situation. He's probably doing it to be annoying. I'll base that statement on past Sandy comments, but he's got a right to his opinion. You are just feeding the troll.

Sandy, if you are truly trying to contribute, maybe you should try to be more useful.

There are lots of people who are offensive at some point at or another. It's actually much easier to ignore someone who is always posting useless comments. It's the ones that posts enough good stuff so that you feel compelled to read their posts and then WAM!!! they sucker punch you... those are the ones you have to watch out for. ;)

edit: Spelling error.

Doh! Or they quickly delete their post before they think you read it, leaving your post just hanging there. For the record, Buddha suggests booting Sandy, motion shelved when sponsor withdraws nomination.

yeah, you know. its taken me years with a horrible woman, and just one without her, to come to a few realizations. you simply cannot fault someone for their feelings. you cant tell someone what theyre feeling is wrong. if youre offended, isaac, youre offended...

im all about peace. i have a short fuse but it takes a damned hot fire to light it. i understand there are all kinds of variations of the sentence above, as it pertains to other individuals. take your time dude, in my profession, i was taught the 24 hour rule. a cool down period if you will. it looks to me that both the offender and the offendee have done just that. good for you both.

but for what it's worth. should i type (and i probably wont) a few words that ruffle your feathers. plead your case to me. my email is armarsh75@yahoo.com. whatever it is, or isnt, can be worked out far far away from the confines of MBH, and without a moderator or referee....i assure you that in the end, a mutual understanding will have come to pass. I dont like to float in the nether regions...i have no enemies and prefer to keep it thatta way...

this thread got me reminiscing on the iron sheik from the WWF. the perfect 80's wrestling villain. i saw him and macho man randy savage go at it once, all the while, the crowd calling him a ba- oh nevermind...

someone was offended over a comment.
the person making the comment probably didn't mean to intentionaly offend but did offend none the less.
appologies, retractions, deletions and amendments to the creed have been made.
debating what is offensive or insulting or whether ones experience of discrimination is worse than anothers is not constructive and only leads to further arguements and offense.

there is nothing more to be gained from this thread.
we are all adults can we not just move on.

Blueharper, to the best of my knowledge, my last name is Filipino, but many Filipinos have Spanish surnames, and it is much along the lines where African Americans often have "white" surnames because they were the names of their slave owners and that's a very similar thing with Filipinos, as they were originally ensalved by the Spanish before the spanish lost the spanish American War to the Americans.

Some years back on TV, there was a commercial where the words, "words can hurt like a fist" was used, and it is very true.

That appears to be the state of rascism today...we argue to stalemate, give up, then sweep it back under the carpet so it can reemerge later.

White Americans
, can't we be big enough to just get the impact over there without trying to diminish it or argue that it is incorrect?

Hetero males, this practice would actually improve your sex life!

Give it up, and it just may clear it up!
