follow the link below:
(custom-shop->DIY)

You'll see a bunch of videos on the basics of reed work. Take a look at the custom combs too.

Buddha makes composite combs which are really good. Interestingly, he can make them in different THICKNESSES which has an effect on tone and response.

Personally, I don't like wood combs, and I'm not wild about plastic combs, either. But I think composite combs are really nice.

Dick Sjoeberg also makes composite combs that are very good, but he is considerably more expensive than Buddha.

I haven't tried any of Chris Reynolds' (Blow Your Brass Off) combs, but I think he is having some sort of sale right now.

FWIW.

I have a MB G that is very airy. I have never modded a harp in my life, but I think this one needs it badly. I will let you know how it goes.
Grats on the successful modding.

Diamond Wood?, Corian, Lexan, Brass, Titanium, Plastic, Wood, Ceramic Metal Composites... I'd love to see some one take a shot at liquid metal. If you click on the Thread Organizer link in my tag you can click through to customizers and reed (pun) their sites.

Hey Dog, I'm going thru this at the mo. I'm just about to order some thru Chris Reynolds I think!?
I like a wooden comb but only hardwood is gonna do as I've a new SBS/365 that has swollen it's comb within half an hour can you believe!
Anyway, I've heard good reports about the corian, so I think I'll give that a whirl.
The fantasy marble however takes my fancy for a couple of MBs I'm upgrading. I'm presently favouring the MB's (1896) for my customizing apprenticeship as I like the reeds close proximity hence responsiveness to minor tweakings.....
There's another maker in Sweden called Sjoeberg that has some beautiful looking wooden combs but I only see GM ones available. Their work looks tasty!
Good luck Dog on the tools, treat em' like ladies and for you they shall sing!!

For combs I recommend Randy Sandoval and Chris Reynolds. They both do incredible work.

Rubes, the Sjoeberg link is in my customizers thread... they look sweet!!! We have at 4-5 members off the top of my head that I can think of who do custom combs.

edit: I think there are a lot more. Anyone who makes custom combs, sound off! (I think there are close to a dozen I know the screen names for...)

By the way...

if you need a sp20 with a wooden comb - that does not make any sense to me. Because the reeds are the same, and putting the sp20 inside-lying plates on wood will look worse and will be a bit harder to assembe/disassemble. What I mean is an sp20 with a wooden comb and a MB with the same comb on screws is basically the same thing.

Jim I noticed some of the harps from that link have full length cover plates. I assumed they were the cover plates from the Seydel Favorite, but when I zoomed in I saw that the full length cover plates had the 1847 logo on them. Is Seydel planning to come out with an 1847 that has full length covers? I've always been a fan of full length cover plates. I know PT Gazell uses the full length covers from the Seydel Favorite and puts them onto the 1847. It would make sense that Seydel would come out with an 1847 with full length coverplates considering that they've been coming out with different versions of the 1847 (so far they've only made them with different types of combs).

Nope, that was a limited series for "home" use :)
I was lucky to get those too.

If you need a 1847 with those, I have several of them.
