Any UK members planning on being at the Colne blues festival at the end of this month? (bank hol weekend)

We have a couple of gigs - one Fri and one Mon - so come along and say hello if so..

I live in Lancashire so I'm very close to Colne.

However I won't be going as over the last few years the festival has degraded to a point where it's just not worth going. In it's heyday of the 1990's Colne was an amazing festival and was a must attend festival for UK blues fans. A few years ago the management changed and the festival has suffered greatly since. The last time I went was in 2008 and I couldn't find a single "blues" act anywhere on the free stages in the whole day.

The festival does tend to feature some more rock-orientated bands now than the earlier years which isn't so much my thing, but there's still good stuff to be heard.

Crosscut Saw are friends of mine, and they are a great live outfit playing in the free venues.. very rootsy blues, you wouldn't be mistaking it for any other form of music that's for sure..

Aside from that, I can't speak for any of the other acts, but we're certainly also a blues band. I'm not interested in playing rock. I guess it depends on if you're a purist, in which case yes, you probably would have to look elsewhere..

I'm not a purist but when I last went it was all hard rock bands and jazz fusion on the "Roadhouse" circuit.

I checked this years "Roadhouse" line up after my last post and I see that "Mud in Your Ear" are playing. They are very good with a great harp player. Dave Arcari is also playing and he is pretty good on the guitar. Lyndon Anderson and Johnny Hewitt are on the British stages too. Both of whom are really good harp players.

Maybe the organisers have started to listen to their target audience finally.

Yeah, I'm familiar with quite a few of the bands on the British stage. Lyndon Anderson was on the bill when we played up in Dundee recently, Chantel McGregor is from this neck of the woods (Yorkshire) and the guy from Junkhouse Dog just bought an amp from me.

I'll try and catch Mud in Your Ear.

Hey Chinaski, when you were in Aberdeen did you happen to run into Terry Duggan (bass player) and Reg Pattan (drummer)? They are part of the backing band at our local jam, the Coach and Horses in Leyton. A more solid rhythm section you'll never meet. Reg also plays with Bad Town Blues whose ace keyboard player Ray Bartrip died recently.

I know they usually play in Aberdeen with Werner "Flamingstratman" Lindner

Hi Oisin, do you mean Dundee rather than Aberdeen? We were at the Blues Bonanza there, but I didn't run into any of the people you mentioned.

The Flaming Stratmen were definitely on the bill, but I didn't manage to catch them. Although looking at the pics on the website, it looks as if a woman was playing drums for them.

Sorry you're right it was Dundee Chinaski. The woman drummer is Werners wife and she has played a few times at the jam.Reg and Terry were there in 2009 so I thought they'd made it up this year but talking to Reg I remember they have a regular saturday gig now so didn't make it.
Werner is a a great act to catch. We have quite a few german bluesmen attend our jam.

@Chinaski:

I'll be playing there with Andy Sharrocks & The Smokin' Jackets (on Monday, I think, I'll have to check when / where).

If time allows... How do I find you?

@Chinaski:

Think we'll be on the British stage (it might be called the Jessica Taylor stage at that point?) at 5pm on Monday.

So... I might be able to get out in time to catch you at 7pm. Depends how far away the Rugby Club is... Hopefully not too far...

Aha! This, I'm guessing, is why you wrote

three posts ago.

D'oh!

Dunno if I'll still be around at 10pm, will try to catch you if I am...

If you're around where we're at on Monday afternoon, don't be a stranger...
