Judy and I bought a house on a 1/2 acre just outside the village. It has a detached 2 car cinderblock garage that I am having converted to a full music studio/living space. Here are some pictures from day one, which was yesterday. It should be done by the end of the month. It is going to have a full bath, central air/heat, sheetrocked walls/ceiling, and plumbed for a kitchen. This is a 40 year dream come true. I will have plenty of space for my 1 man band set up, recording with acoustic guitar (need lots of space for mic placements), and an area to do my painting. I am going to put a mural on the outside wall with a tunnel, for the Tunnel of Dreams Studio.

I have always dabbled with recording from jambox to my current 12'x 12' studio in our other house. This one is my dream. Space to create. Now I am so jammed up I can hardly move inside it. This one will have its own entrance as well so I can throw music recording parties inside and not mess with the house. IOnce it is running anyone who is my area and wants to record will be welcome to come by. Walter

Wow! What a project! Congratulations! I hope things happen smoothly.

Beautiful dogs.

The full bathroom brings this project to a whole other level. How are are you going to finish the floors?

Can we expect future tracks produced while playing in the bath? That would make you a one-man-bath-band?

thanks guys! The dogs are our children. Both are rescues. I have worked with collie rescue for about 10 years. One is tricolor male and the other a mutt. They are always in the studio with me. That makes the current 12' x 12' studio like a sardine can. I am not sure about the floors yet. We moved from a turn of the century 2,500 sq ft home to one that is 1,000 sq ft. We always have lived in small houses/apts/bus and that big old house is beautiful but not for us. It has way too much upkeep and cost. Hopefully it will sell quickly. Owning 2 homes is not our style. After putting some rugs in our new home, ther are a lot of throw rugs leftover that will easily fill most of the studio. I am going to put them down on the concrete for now. It will be kind of a mosaic effect of different pattern oriental style rugs. I am itching to get it done. My current studio in the other house's basement is still running but I get too sad going over there. It is like a ghost town. We have moved over 30 times in 30 years - 5 states and 3 countries. Moving brings up a ton of sad goodbyes........... That is why I haven't posted any songs lately. Walter

The full bath and plumbed kitchen are going to be special. It also will be cable ready. I will put a tv in there to watch my old movies and old television shows. When we sell the place it will add to the value. I am going to put the guitar amp in the bathroom for isolation.

Hope I don't sound envious Walter but that looks and sounds like every harp players ideal bolt-hole. Looks a quality job.

I am envious of it as well tookatooka because I still can't believe it is happening. Most of Judy and my life has been spent in musician poverty. Both of us going to college later in life and at the same time lucking into buying a 0 down house in Sonoma county ca 9 years ago that doubled in value during the 6 years we owned it, has made it all possible. We sold it at the peak of the market frenzy there. It was insane. 1/2 million for a 2bd 1 bath in the ghetto and they called it entry level housing. It took 2 hours to sell because we underpriced it. I feel sorry for all those people that got caught in that scene. It was like the gold rush days. Every week the homes just kept going up and up. Moving out here to Ohio 3 years ago has made all these things possible. In california we would still be struggling to pay the 2k a month mortgage on our 1,000 sq ft home that bordered the ghetto. On musician pay I would still be trying to figure out how to pay the rent and be dreaming a set of harps that were not flat. Education is the key to getting out of poverty. I learned that the hard way........ Walter

I will be throwing studio parties regularly and will post them here.

Congratulations Walter and enjoy the process. Getting to build a space to your won spec is a rare luxury and very rewarding.

FYI - property values in Sonoma County leveled and then took a serious dive in the last couple years. I still live here. I hope they start to rise again some day.

Congratulations, Walter!

Thanks for the generous offer, if I ever get your way I would love to look you up!

It looks like you have everything well handled, but for what it's worth, I am a residential builder, and if you ever have any questions during your construction, feel free to holler!

Greg: Where do you live? We still stay in touch with a bunch of people in Sonoma County (my wife is a bay area native). They told us of the market crash. The homes out there have been way overpriced for decades. The sad thing I saw alot was kids go to college and not be able to buy a home near where they grew up. Families got splintered and infastructure people - doctors, teachers, police, fire, social workers wouldn't take jobs because the pay wouldn't get them into home ownership. There was so much crime, homelessness, and mentally ill on the streets. All that stress got to me. I am very sensitive to that stuff and had to move out (my second time leaving Ca). I fear the worst is still to come in Ca. I am glad we left but feel very sad for all the kaos out there. I hope you are faring well.

Thanks for that Nancy! I am putting it in my dreams. That is the last piece of the puzzle when I retire from teaching in 7-10 years. Walter

thanks shanester! If I have any questions I will ask you for sure. The guy doing the work is well known for his quality and timeliness. He restored the 1800's house across the street from ours. It is really stunning. I impressed on him how much this space is to my mental well being and he has assured me all will be done in a few weeks. He is a hard worker. Walter

In MN we need to keep the garage a garage so we have a place to park the car when it's 30 below! Your wife is never going to see you once this is built...you should have added a bedroom while you were at it! I would be interested in seeing some of your paintings as I have an interest in that as well. I see lots of fun in your near future... : )

Today the inside front wall got framed and the door hung. I went to our old house and recorded for a couple hours. It felt good. Then I spent an unsuccessful hour trying to load the mp3's onto my laptop at the new house so I could post them on soundclick. I no longer have internet at the old house. I think I need a recording program on this computer to do that. I will load samplitude on it tomorow and try again. Walter

Hi Marty: He is getting close. Trenches still need to be dug to the studio for electric, gas, water.

KC69: I am glad you like the cd. I hope my recording quality/skills have improved some since then. You are welcome to stop by anytime. Walter
