That wasn't bad. I'd like to think I could play that well. Thought his vibrato was good too. Am I missing something here?

Hey NOD remind me not to give you any links to my YouTube Channel. My hand control is not too good either. Once the camera's running it goes straight out the window and I'm flapping like a demented chicken.

if you play acoustically like rice miller you can use the hands effectively, but with a mic how do you wah-wah?

N.O.D. Perhaps you would like to show us how it's done? I think we'd all be very interested to hear you play this tune.

Not every song requires wahs and other hand techniques. This is not a blues, and it requires a very different approach. If I were playing this song I would want to do my best to imitate the sound of Stevie's chromatic playing, which would require a brighter, more open sound. So I really don't feel there's much need to be doing a whole lot of cuping and muting the harp, or doing a lot wahs, etc., on this song. To say this is "The worst i have ever seen:(" is kind of ridiculous. But maybe you'll make me see the light when you post your video of you showing us how this tune should be played.

I think this is a tune that most harmonica players who work solely in the blues genre would have a difficult time with.

NOD:"Yo I'm not saying he is the worst player i have ever Heard, this is far from the truth "

I wonder where someone would get that idea, maybe it was when you said it was "The worst i have ever seen: ("

So when you said it was "The worst i have ever seen : (", what you were actually saying was "it's a great rendition of the Tune Bravo!!!!"

Well I guess we're not going to get to hear your rendition : ( Too bad, it sounds like you're "more than confident" that you could knock this one out of the park pretty easily ; )

EDIT: BTW, I hope you don't take me too seriously NOD, I'm just joking around with you a little bit.

@Diggs

Thanks really enjoyed watching this and Mr. Hiramatsu's other clips - I really don't understand why using multiple harps isn't a more popular technique in the West. I must play around with it a little. I wish I spoke Japanese so I could understand some of his instructional stuff.

Apparently this is Stevie Wonder's favourite Stevie Wonder song. I liked this rendition a lot - it's inspired me and I thought the tone was just right for the style. All the stuff about "correct hand technique" just doesn't make sense to me - it sounds good, so how would muting that lovely, bright, poppy sound improve it? If it was blues, OK, there's a place for a compressed acoustic tone (but not all the time).

Anyway Diggs, thanks for the post and the inspiration!

Did you watch the same video that I did???

"correct hand technique
Should Make sense to every harp Player"

Agreed - where we disagree is that this is a bad example of it. It isn't - it is a good example of using an open style to achieve a brighter tone, with more subtle variations in sound created by very deliberate hand movements.

"if the Bro used his hands like a loud hailer" - he does! and there is very definite tonal shaping going on here.

***EDIT*** Looks like N.O.D deleted all his posts :(

As much as I understand not all tunes require different hand techniques, on the other hand, NOD has a very legitimate point that many players too often have very little or essentially no real use of their hands or fingers in their playing to help shape the sound. Even with amplified playing, there most certainly are hand techniques to be used, even if it is limited in scope compared to acoustic playing. It's all part of shaping your sound and too many players think effects and gear when you talk about shaping one's sound and few even bother to consider using their hands at all.

Does it apply to chromatics, even in non blues situations?? Absolutely, and Larry Adler used his hands amazingly well almost like one would shape the sounds with his hands on a diatonic.

Personally, what I've seen too often of the average player's video postings, especially in when playing acoustically is how LIITLE they invilve their hands in shaping the sound of the instrument.

NOD's point is VERY legitimate, tho I really wouldn't quite have worded it the way he did.

He has a fair point - i agree, I just think NOD has chosen the wrong video to criticise. IMHO this is not an example of bad hand technique, and I cannot figure how it warranted his now deleted comment that it was the worst he had ever seen.

This player is using his hands to shape the tone!

I really enjoy your postings along with barbq bob and always try to learn something from you both-its just the fact that you said the guy was the worst you ever heard was a little blunt because I thought the man played pretty decent-with that said I will continue to read your postings and take it all in because this forum has been very helpful to me the last 5 months

In my opinion the guy in the video is a very good harp player. I would like to hear NOD's version too!

Regardless of whether or not the man was shaping his notes to the max degree....he can play. I think we all have to remember that computer videos are just snap shots of life and unless a player in a video boasts about a certain attribute of their playing on the video in question then the benefit of the doubt should be given as far as if it was their best work or not.

The guy sounds very good and on a nice groove....to me. (my wife actually came in here to see who it was playing, after hearing it on the speaker, and she HATES harmonica players in general, including me)
Wail on, ace, ignore everyone and do your thing.
