The Q3 is cheaper and does video, but only has the internal mic. The H4n has the same mic capsules, but can be used as a 4 track. Plus it is "easy" to use.

Which one would you take? I already have a video camera, so the video isn't totally necessary. There is also a huge price difference with the H4n running $100 more than the Q3.

Take the H4n. I have it and it really is a good one. My friend has the Q3 and I'm not very impressed of it's uses. In fact our last gig was filmed with regular handheld and Q3 and we actually put the regular video on youtube as it had at least as good sound and better picture quality.

I also think that H4n has better mic capsules than the Q3

I don't have a standalone recorder, but I've heard good things about Blue Microphones. They make high quality USB mics for use with a computer, but they also make the "Mikey" and the "stereo Mikey" for use with and Ipod or an Iphone. It might be a good choice for a field recorder if you already have an Ipod/Iphone:

The two USB mics that I've heard really good things about are the Snowball and the Yeti:

Anyway, just another option to complicate things for you!

I own an H2 and have been very happy with it. I've been surprised at the quality of the recordings that have come out of it. A buddy of mine loaded a couple of the tunes into Pro Tools and cleaned them up. They sounded good. I picked up the H2 for $150.

There's a new Zoom coming out next month, the H1, worth looking at.

I own a Tascam DR-1. There as good or better than anything out there for the price.

Amazon seems to have the lowest prices. That's where I got it.

Check out the DR line.
