I just got an SM57 for my birthday, just what I wanted!

Hijo de la ---ga I love it!

I am having a blast, playing it through the 3 amps I have left from my guitar days (I pawned all but my beloved acoustic about a year and a half ago, on the dark night of my soul that ultimately resulted in my epiphany with the harp!)

I had been playing through a god awful albeit generously donated cheap karaoke mic that I never even really knew if it was Hi or lo z, it sounded like caca with and without a transformer.

This mic sounds like a real instrument, and as I suspected, great with my 68 silverface champ I had acquired a few years ago, now I just need to figure out how to crunch it a wee bit harder without feedback...

I like the mic because i can get a fairly clean sound for some rock and country stuff I play, but if i cup it really hard, it gets more Chicago-y.

I really love the brassy Butterfield type tone, which this does very well.

I played at a blues jam last night on the house band's harp player's rig...I really love his tone (bullet mic w/ custom vintage amp), but I am wanting to try mine out, I had a few people tell me to turn up and I know my sound would cut harder, maybe they will let me set mine up next week!

I'm so exited I could just tinkle!

Nothin' like a new toy to brighten your day. Enjoy! The 57 is a very, very versatile mic.

Some day, you may want to Ultimatize it - make a great mic into an even better one.

LOVE my Ultimate 57. Except for one year with the first band I played a lot of harp in (Mesa Boogie MkII with a Audix O5, which was an awful rig), and a short stint with the EV RE10, the 57 is the only harp mic I've used.

I came across it totally be accident as it was the only mic I had available to use.

Thanks guys, sound like the 57 posse is in the ha-ouse!

Oh Lawd, we've done it now!

Hope we don't start a stick vs bullet war! (OK maybe I do!)

I just can't help it! I love this mic! I'm gonna play it again right now!

Hit it!

bulletizing sounds like a really good idea.

the only fault with 57s, and it not a big fault because you aren't suppposed to hold them anyway, is the grille spins around a bit.

Vintage greens, astatic, shakers and more.... all sitting in storage because of the sm 57! You WILL cut more...and easier. Feedback has more to do with the amp... you may have to go bigger or get an eq of some sort. All your position between amp and mic is everything.

A little duct tape placed on the barrel and below screen on black plastic keeps the screen piece from spinning off. I,ve been employing this method for 35 yr.

I just got a GH Ultimate. It was a 545 with a bulletizer, not a 57, but I cannot say enough good things about it. It is great even through a PA.

@shanester: Whether or not they'll let you play your 57 through the on stage harp amp, they will probably let you play it through the PA.

I've got a 545 Ultimate which is very similar to a 57. I like it a lot, and one of the things I like about it is that it sounds good through the PA as well as through an amp. It has good proximity effect and responds well to a tight cup whether you are playing through an amp or through the board. Very versatile harp mic.

Guys, be careful of taping up your 57's.. it is my understanding that they are "ported" and the compression can blow out the element if it can not breathe...
I used to do this myself and for awhile I was getting a nice dirty sound... but soon after they would go raggy on me - it was suggested that I stop taping them.

I just crossed the threshold on how to cup this in conjunction with embouchure to get that compressed tone in the middle of jamming on "Fever". It's night and day!

Now I really can't stop playing!

Good point about the PA hvyj, I'll do it!

Can you post it... would like to hear it...!

And you should be able to use it through any amp with a quarter inch adapter...

I have a 545 element...early Mexico make. Looking for a shell.
I need some $$$ for a customizing ala Mr. Greg Heumann. A bulletizing in a unique wood frame. A completely different reverse pistol grip. I've drawn up the concepts.
I draw well.

I've got the Ultimate 545. I feel like I never really had a truly good harp mic until now. I also got a Samson Airline 77 wireless system, and the combo is fantastic. Greg is as good a person to deal with as you will ever find in the music world.
