Some really tasty harp playin' too. Another clear demonstration that tone starts with the player. And just look at the size of his hands!

I love how intense/powerful his harp playing was in that clip, and I also love the incredible vibrato he puts on the 2 hole draw.

the wolfs expressive harp playing has always been overshadowed by his very singular, extremely powerful, vocal.

i love his harp gregg! economy and tone, and...he's dead on the money every time.

More proof that you don't need to be overly technical to rock the f**kin' house!

Obviously his vibrato takes a lot of skill, but he doesn't let the fear of making mistakes disrupt his flow.

I saw him several times in the 70's, but he was very sick back then and he always blew thru the PA and his vibrato was real slow and deep and I used to see the PA columns shake like hell whenever he hit that vibrato, which is REAL distinctive. I don't have small hands but his were easily double the size of mine. His speaking voice was actually deeper and raspier than his singing voice was. He had the single baddest harp tone I ever heard. He was a huge influence on me. The only guy I know that has that vibrato down cold is a buddy of mine in NYC named Danny Russo.

I like MR Wolf,But im not familar with alot of his music, but i plan on it,cause he's cool,In the movie cadilac records i noticed he played the guitar as well as the harp, and i have heard a couple songs where i think thats what he played,It got me to wondering which one he played the most,or just played both about the same?

Go to iTunes or Amazon and buy his recorded works. One can't be much of a blues harp player w/o being acquainted with Howlin' Wolf's recorded works.

All that and what about Hubert Sumlin playing a gumby guitar and showing that tone is in your fingers. Outtasight!

Hubert was an integral part of Wolf's sound. Hubert Sumlin is as important and influential as Robert Jr. Nobody can play like Hubert. Sadly, neither of those guys are as well known as they should have been!

That clip is from the documentary "The Howlin' Wolf Story". One of the best blues docs I've seen. You can get it for about $15 on amazon...I HIGHLY recommend it.
