Greetings! How about a show n tell thread of your most used and abused favorite mics...doesn't have to be pretty either. Just... your favorite.
I prefer a modified EV920 Spherex, and an Astatic 200 mod. The 920 below has a great customized grill from Greg Heumann. We collaborated on this design. It enables the player to maximize the output, by getting up close and personal to the element.
Any closer and you'd be touching the diaphram.
I chromed the grill after Greg finished it for me. Ofcourse we all know how amazing Greg is.
Truly a master craftsman, with metal or wood...
If you have an idea, he'll go to great lenghts to make it a reality. Or, he'll flat out tell you it's not possible....no harm in asking.
I always say, "you don't ask, you don't get".
The other is a 200 chop I made for a fellow blues player here in Honolulu. Corey Funai. He is the front man for Bluzilla. Hip name for a blues band, eh? This is a fine example of a paint job gone bad...then good.the checking undercoat pulled just enough of the top coat to give a nice effect. He wanted a HOT LAVA, FIREY molten kind, red, orange, and yellowy THANG....and I am emabarrassed to say. It took me about a year to finally get something "with his name on it". I almost kept it for myself...one of a kind, really. I tried to do it again, with no success. Because he is such a cool guy, and if he ever saw me with it, he'd ask for one, too. I knew he deserved it more than I did.
And about three coats of PPG urethane arcylic.
The EV920 is mine, and it gets used alot. Like the 200 chop, there is plenty of room in the shell. The 920 accommodates a vc pot nicely, too.
This particular one has a 100k pot inside. The knob turns so smoothly you get hooked immediately, and have a hard time going back to the knob set in the front.
Like many designs out there. The front vc positioning is not a good feel for me...that's all.
After this type of design, I have a hard time using the others.
The over all aim, for me, is to have a lightweight, comfortable in the hand "feel".

nice!! i played that 200 chop that night at kona brewing company. it sounds great too. especially after i tweaked his sonny jr so it wasn't so bassy.
you always use that 920. it's like you don't own 30 other mics.
it is more comfortable than my dave kott biscuit.
great grille by heumann.
PS. now you gotta show me how to post pics since i showed you how to do vids. ---------- MP hibachi cook for the yakuza doctor of semiotics superhero emeritus

Yeah, those Sonny Jrs are amazing...once you find the sweet spot...
You reeeeally missed the 4X10, bro...not to worry, I'll be bringing it to the show next week.
..and there was an anniversary party at Anna (o'briens)Bananna's, today. JP Smoketrain was there with his one man show..we had the party in the back area.
Free food and cheap drinks. All the regulars there lappin it up...too. I got a video of him playing, but couldn't find anyone to do it for me, when I got up...minor minor..
I do have some video of the 4X10 and Admiral..I'll try and post later.
I happen to be over at Teddys Better Burger, and JUST SO HAPPEN to have my gear in the car. And, naturally, JP needed some harp accompaniment.
It is amazing how the tips roll in when a decent harp player gets up. Yuk Yuk...
Go to Photobucket...and the rest is easy. I missed that step today, while trying to figure out the whole deal. There is no way around it, you need the web site help..Photobucket is free, too..( me thinks).

Wow, I finally managed to learn how to do it. And after careful consideration...I chose a vid worth posting. Sadly, it ends abruptly. For that I apologize. But this is a Rod Piazza version, of Sonny Boys classic. Check it out. I am a big fan of charlie M. rod P. kim W. jerry McCain, and most cats with a fresh innovative style.

The White one in front is another example of the grill switch. It can be a novelty, for sure. The harp fits better across the grill, too. But I haven't seen any of htese since my last batch 4 yrs ago. Doesn't anyone like this idea? Anyone have any 200 shells they want to get rid of?It doesn't matter, with or without the handle...preferrable without. but I can fix most dents and imperfections. The power of JB Weld

I have always had an inferiority complex over modifiers who powder coat.
I am envious, and have yet to do it. I heard it's not as easy, but rewarding like anything else.
I think the Dyna Mic chopped with the Commando element is unreal!
Was it powder coated? I certainly can't tell.
Nice finish whether it is, or is not.
I have been happy with PPG. And I have actually had someone tell me, he dropped it on concrete and nothing happen..not a scratch. God knows, I have done that same thing at least twice in my life. And was never that lucky. I wised up pretty fast(I better not say that too loud).
Some perfectionists poo-poo it, as not durable enough.
Though, technically they're correct, the difference can be too subtle for the average Joe, who only wants to love a wow shiney thing in his hands, with lots of shiney chrome and and and colorful gadgets...a toy.

Jeff Spoor @ Cumberland Cases/HarpMicgaskets was doing some really nice powder coat work a while back. Hope we get him back into the fray.
I tried painting a mic with auto touch up paint out of a spray can. It looked great, didn't hold up at all. MP - when you say PPG I assume you're talking about catalyzed and/or baked-on finish, right? ---------- /Greg

This is my gig mic. Still one of the prettiest I ever made, I think. The grill says "GH" in the style you've seen on Kim and Charlie's mics. It has a stealth volume control and a 99H86 black label CR.

gregg,
that's a question for mojokane cuz he painted my mics.
i would guess it is catalyzed.
i would think the main deal is how well the primer adheres to the bare metal.
after that it is a matter of several coats at proper intervals.
my girlfriends car had a faulty factory primer job and bubbled up and peeled like those heat baked blues blasters. ---------- that mic is a real looker gregg!

Yo Bro's
the Dyna Mic chopped Was it powder coated? No mate Nice finish thanks
Bro's it's all about how many coats you apply how they are applyed and how long it takes to apply these coats, i will put anywhere between 3 5 coats on at a time waiting 10 minutes between coats
done in a heat area of my shed kept at a leval heat of about 30degs i place the paint pot and mic in the heated area befor applying makes the paint thiner to atomise
i will leave the mic in the heated area for 2 days to cure, then i leave in open air to harden im not finished yet,
it's time for my special finish coat another 2 days of painting i will leave the finish coat curing for a week but only in direct sunlight after a short curing period in the heated area,
i don't count but say 10 most defintly more coats of paint was layed on the Dyna-mic over about a week,
with 4 finish coats of Polyester Resin it gives a further deep lush look:) ---------- Cheers Bro's

actually, powdercoating is cool. thats what they use on hospital beds and things that get banged. i was just trying to cheer up mojokane.
speaking of banged. my friends wood fritz mic took a beating and is ruined.
a bass player walked into his cord like it was a trip wire and sent the precious flying, followed by bouncing all over a hardwood floor.

Yeah, I was thinking about how to really give it a glossy finish and get enough protection, without being taken to the cleaners. The product is awesome. No complaints, yet. PPG is just a brand name for a popular brand of Acrylic urethanes...primarily automotive finishes. There are other things as good or better. Dave Kott is the only person I knew(haven't senn or heard from him in years). I had a nice Biscuit, and had Dave paint it with one of his incredible epoxy finishes. Amazing. ut try and find what he's using, and THEN try to work with it and succeed in doing what he does. It hard stuff to work with. I tried and had a couple good finishes. but it's too tempermantal and waay too much hassle for the cost and effort. He's a perfectionist. I know, that's not a bad thing. It is a trick and he has it down. Just like anything you put your mind to, will make you and expert if you stick with it long enough....just don't give up, like me. I'm strictly an Arylic Urethane guy...and yes, it's a catalyzed finish.
Here's a headsup for a good blues show this week end. In Honolulu. If you happen to be swimming by...
