when someone can play like this? I don't think I even managed to get in the queue when they were handing talent out. He makes it look so bloody effortless. Apart from the slight movement of his foot, you wouldn't even think he was enjoying it.
I think his harp video proves the old saying. "Play the harmonica for someone, and you make them happy for a day. Teach them to play the harmonica, and they will go out and buy a bad hat." ---------- intermediate level (+) player per the Adam Gussow Scale, Started playing 2001
Although I absolutely hate the synthesized sound he has on it, I think he sounds considerably better on the keyboard than anything else. It was the only thing I could listen to for more than a few seconds.
If I had more money than sense, I'd buy a left-handed Fender Strat, string it upside down and play it right-handed. I wonder how many people have done that before. ---------- Andrew, gentleman of leisure, noodler extraordinaire.
Kingley, I was thinking the opposite - he's better on the guitar than on the keyboards, albeit soul-less on both. ---------- Andrew, gentleman of leisure, noodler extraordinaire.
Schmecks of big ego for sure but he's just grooving and having fun. He's not so bad. He's got the licks down pat on guitar and his boogie woogie piano is OK. I think it lacks emotion but maybe that's what he was trying to do. Who know's but him.
He's enjoying the journey, what the hell, eh? ---------- "Keep it in your mouth" - XHarp
Jim, I was of course referring to Jimi Hendrix - if a right-handed person were nerdy and wanted to imitate Hendrix, he could buy a left-handed Fender Strat and string it upside down. ---------- Andrew, gentleman of leisure, noodler extraordinaire.
I think the soullessness is in the mix. He has the rhythm up to loud (and it's too repetitive) and I don't hear much in the way of panning of the instruments to make them sound like they aren't in exactly the same spot.
Joe, there's nothing great about them, but the guitar one does illustrate the value of technique - he has perfect scale technique, and that enables him to move around the frets effortlessly. It's what every musician should strive for, then all your effort can go into musical expression and you don't have to waste any of that effort wondering where to put your fingers next.

Andrew - Technically, he is good in these videos. I felt his playing lacked any qualities that expressed any emotion. Playing with soul and feeling is everything. His playing didn't move me.
This reminds of when some rock fusion cat comes to a blues jam and blows his wad with tapping and sweeping and processed weedley tone, and looks around as if he has kicked everyone's ass because "this blues shit is so easy to play, yo".
