Hi guys,

Wondered if anyone out there knows of some blues joints in Hawaii. I will be going there next month for a while, and would love to catch some blues, or go to a jam, as I dont get much opportunity where I normally reside.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

hey Tryharp!

there are no blues joints here in honolulu,oahu-or the other islands.

but....if in honolulu, you should check out JP SMOKETRAIN or RICCO, or a cat named BOOGIE.

Ricco was with John Lee Hooker and looks and plays a lot like him.

eddie van halen insisted on bluesman JP Smoketrain to play his wedding.

he hosts some jams too.

BOOGIE is terrific.

these are older black dudes with their shit together.
when you get here e-mail me at markprados at aol.com and i'll give you more info.

I'd like to add, thanks MP, the Hawaii blues scene is slooooowly improving.
Which is to say, if you get here soon, it won't be very good. BUT!
If you are here on July 17th, check out this link for more info. http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/muc/1824910939.html
The Cafe Che Pasta Bar And Grill is playing it smart and investing in the blues scene. Providing locals and tourist alike with a place to go for a nice array of local blues bands. This is beginning to show signs of maintaining a following.
Lots of the folks, MP noted, have been at the last 3 events.
Please note also, the only reason my band, Kevin and The Blues Blasters, keeps popping up at these shows, is because this is the ony way I can play with good players, thus improving my musicianship and musical director talents.
Fortuantely, I have paid some dues(IMHO)along the way, enlisting excellent players who want to participate, too. It was alot harder when I couldn't play well enough to hold even one sets worth of blues. I'm at around 2 sets worth now. Sittin in has been my m.o. for too long. I am happy this has come along and enabled me to play out with killer musicians.
There will be a video posted here if all goes well. And I'm workin on one for the earlier forum request, too. I don't want to embarrass myself and subject myself to scrutiny, though graciously open to constructive criticism, if done nicely. Stay tuned...

MP,

Thanks a lot for the info, I thought you were around there somewhere and hoped you might chirp in.

Sorry for the delay in thanking you, but I went fishing straight after work and just got home now.

I caught 12 calamari squid! YUM!

Thats enough info to get me excited!!! I love John Lee Hooker. I play a bit of guitar and love trying to play some of his stuff, I will definitely check Ricco out if hes playing somewhere, and the other guys as well.

I'll be there about the 8th August, for about 19 nights, so hopefully something is on. Ill drop you an email around that time and see if you have any more info. I will have the good lady and 3 kids under five in tow, but hopefully will be able to slip out for a blues fix.

Mojo, I wont be there in July, I checked out that link though and I'm sorry I wont be there....oh well.

Thanks again guys

no problem Try.

MojoKane pays more attention to 'who is playing where' than i do.

actually i pay no attention unless i get to play too. just selfish i guess.

just went out on Capt.Jons boat and did a duo thing.

afterward, we talked about the logistics of a whole band on board, but the drums pose a problem,ie; where do we put the tourists who pay to keep this biz afloat?

Well, if you can't find decent blues, at least there's all those fruity tropical drinks.
