I was goofing around with a tongue depressor and an open backed harmonica today, ($5 BluesBand, I wasn't risking anything valuable) just to see if it was possible feasible to change the pitch of notes by blocking part of the reed. It works, sort of. It sounded a bit like a slide whistle.

I didn't have a screw driver nearby or I would have taken off the covers to make it easier, but it got me thinking. Are there any free reed instruments that physically use something to alter how much of a reed can vibrate? I know that's sort of what you do with bending, but I'm thinking about more manual technique, like a you would do on a fret.
