Looks like Jerry has taken over the remaining dates for Charlie Musslewhite on the current Cyndi Lauper tour. Both great harp players-I'm sure Jerry is up for the task.

I just posted something for the harmonica club and saw this thread. I don't play harmonica but I did take my son to see this show earlier this week. He wanted to see Jerry Portnoy play harmonica. Jerry Portnoy is alternating with Charlie Musselwhite. Cyndi Lauper told everyone that they are among the best harmonica players in the world.
The first set was all blues from Cyndi Lauper's new Memphis Blues' CD. The 2nd set was mixed with her earlier pop hit songs.
Jerry Portnoy played amazingly and seamlessly throughout both sets successfully merging the harmonica with the different styles. He had some amazing solos that left the audience in total awe. Joshua was on the edge of his seat the whole time trying to get a better view of what Jerry Portnoy was doing. Next time I'm bringing binoculars.
Cyndi Lauper's vocals were just right that night. You can tell she is very passionate about the blues. She addressed the audience several times about the various blues musicians, told them to look up these original musicians and listen to them, what the songs mean, what blues mean and how it is relevant in today's society and she threw in a little history to encourage a greater appreciation of the blues genre. This was important also considering many came to the show expecting something completely different (pop music). The audience thoroughly enjoyed the show. Everyone in the band are amazing musicians.
If you get the chance to see this show, I strongly encourage you to see it, no matter who the harmonica player is. It is nice to see a highly regarded pop musician incorporating the blues and harmonica into mainstreanm music culture.
Refer to the above schedules-It looks like Charlie is doing the gigs Jerry cant make. Both great players-I think Charlie had previously booked gigs where Jerry was more readily available. I will talk to Jerry today.

Thanks for drawing my attention to Ms. Lauper and her tour cos I now see she's coming to Toronto for a free concert on July 3 as part of Pride celebrations. Hopefully, CM will be there.
Local radio played a cut (Mother Earth) from her new album, and I didn't like it her voice at all - also no harp content if I remember too. Just your Fool is better.
it would be really cool if we could ultimately see two videos of the same tune, one with Charlie and one with Jerry - their styes are so different. I'd love to hear how each interprets the tune.
Man, he's so good....so smooth and seemless. Then there was KIM....It's hard to top either one of em...Just plain rhythm, soul, and goodness. I like the idea of C.L. singing the classics. And Charlie and J.P. are pickin up a whole new gig. Can't wait to see where this goes. Help!? I'm marooned on an island in the middle of nowhere!
