IMO, that's very true (and not only regarding music, btw.). This concept can be applied in so many ways and on so many levels. The more thorough this concept is applied, the greater the success.
Just look at MBH.... Why is this the biggest harp community? Why is Adam now the most influential harp teacher of all time?
It's all because of this:
Now, you know where that 'donate' button is... :) let's show Adam how thanksful we are for that 22nd feb 2007 when he decided to 'give it all away'.
That day he's hit the nerve of time and it changed the harmonica scene for good.

As someone who would prefer to write music, I don't have a problem with pretty people getting up on stage and singing what I write. It's not that prepackaged music isn't about self expression, it's that the person who is on stage may not be the person expressing themselves. To be fair, for generations composers have been writing music for other people to perform.
I liked the Radiohead model, although it may have worked partially because of the novelty of it. I think the music industry will get by, but I think ultimately the record companies need to re-imagine there business as a tour management and merchandising aid.
And to be fair, record companies do absorb losses on tours for bands that don't make it big.
And wow. This guy talks fast.
You also misspelled opinion. :) You're right, this is a really important topic for anyone who wants to make money in the music industry, particularly beyond show fees.
