I love a good harmonica duet. It's a good way to work on trading rhythm playing with soloing. Try it. You might like it.

Yes, it's a lot of fun. We have occasionally done some ensemble playing at our club meetings as well-one player on a chromatic playing a bass line, with others alternating rhythm or melody or lead...Try it with a familar tune. I think that playing with even one other person in a duet setting is a great skill and ear builder.

Any aspirations to perform these duets live or to record them?

It's fun as long as the two don't wind up stepping all over each other.

It can be tastefully done. I've done it as a tool where I'll play a rhythm in a certain feel 1-4-5 and let a newer player learn to solo over the changes.

I'd be interested in doing some duets in a live situation-some familiar tunes where we'd be somewhat confined by the melody, then some improv tunes as well.

Our method has been to start with a specific rhythm or bass line (such as the Memphis Rhyhm or rhumba bass line or box or anything you both know or can figure out by ear).

Then, after we are in sync with the rhythm (in the same groove), one of us begins to solo. The soloist signals the other player when they are ready to switch roles.

I think it is the most fun when the two players have different approaches. I love a couple recordings I have where Joe Filisko and Dennis Gruenling play duets, for example. Andrew and I are pretty different, too. I think it is a great learning experience. We are both new to it, but it's fun.

And we DID record our duets (on my R2D2 handheld recorder). There's even one posted on YouTube. I put it there for Andrew but I haven't heard from him. I don't think he'd mind if you checked it out. He sounds good.

That's fun stuff! Try alternating positions or even each using different tunings. Lots of possibilities! Hmmm, I think I just figured out a big part of our next meetings' agenda...thanks!

TL I would love to hear/see you two perform! Would you make a video next time? Andrew came to the Skype chat once... maybe you could jam out on a Thursday in the chat next time :)

I'm moving into my house this weekend after two months of nearly non-stop major remodelling. Once I get settled in, I wanted to do the chat thing anyway, since I think it's a great idea. When I do, I'll see if I can't get some duet action going, if it's not already.

Lizzie, I got into a lot of that stuff at HCH, notably with Greg Heumann, harpdude61 (can we use your real name here, pal?), and Bobby Cole. there was a lot of multiple-harp jamming going on, and it was a blast... something I don't get to do nearly enough of in regular life.

I played a short song off to the side with Greg as well during HCH.

My only other notable duet was with Dan Gage - 12gagedan on YouTube.

The only video camera I have is my web cam. I tried video with it a few times and the video is jerky. So now I just record the sound and put a photo up.

Here is our rhumba effort...
