in a recent thread BBQ BOB says his Pro Jr. from 1995 came with a good speaker with an alnico magnet.

sometimes i wish companys would leave well enough alone with a good product.

anyway, i was just about sold on getting a junior(cuz bob knows gear) till i found they changed the speaker. knowing myself as i do, i wouldn't sleep until there was a jensen alnico or similar in that puppy.

were there any other changes made to this amp?

The stock ceramic speaker is not bad sounding at all. If you must have an alnico speaker, buy a used Pro Jr and put a Weber 10A125-O with a H dustcap in there. Weber runs specials periodically, so be patient and wait.

Putting a 12AY7 in the preamp socket will get you a little more sweep on the volume control.

thanks joe,
i saw one on ebay for $275. also, my virtual step-son has a tweed job he may want to part with now that he just graduated from college.

Keep an eye on craigslist. They often come up cheaper there. You can get them for a low as $200 for a black tolex version. Be patient.

I've got live MP3 recordings of me playing through a Pro Jr with the stock speaker and the Weber. I don't think that I could tell you which was which.

$275+shipping+speaker+shipping+tube+shipping gets you closer to the price of a used Princeton Reverb reissue.

The Princeton Reverb is a killer harp amp. It's my favourite harp amp ever.

i have a 1970 princeton(no reverb) and i've played these models for years. great amps. never tried a re-issue.

is the re-issue a black face, red knob job with more than 12 watts RMS?

@ MP "is the re-issue a black face, red knob job with more than 12 watts RMS?"

The reissue '65 Princeton Reverb is an exact copy, circuitwise, of the BF Princeton. It is just manufactured with modern processes (PCB circuit board, flying wires to tube sockets, like the RI Bassman, Super Reverb etc). It runs slightly higher voltages than the original amp (5Y3GT can help in this respect, NOS 6V6 not recommended with stock GZ34), has the useful addition of an external bias pot (bias can be set with bias probes & a screw driver, without pulling the chassis).

Some RIs rattle quite badly so try before you buy, if you don't hear the rattle you don't have a problem. Fender UK's suggested "fix" is to fill any gaps around the baffle with mastic, a better solution might be to remove the baffle & see if you can countersink the holes in rear of the baffle, so that it sits flush with the cab before tightening down.

BF/SF Princetons might be rated at 12W but they can typically make 20W or so in anger.

thanks 5F6H,

if i'm not mistaken, CBS didn't change the circuitry of the BF princeton till 1972? therefore essentially a 1970 is a blackface in silver face plate disguise.

correct? or, "go to the back of the class MP"?

PS. i love it when she gets angry.

The Pro Junior I have, which was the last that had the alnico magnet speaker, that was the stock speaker in its day, and it was a 25 watt Eminence Legend that was also used in the Bassman reissues until Fender came out with the Bassman LTD, which began using the reissue Jensens (which IMO isn't quite as good as the original P10R Jensens, but looks the same COSMETICALLY). The Eminence is a damned good speaker, especially for the money.

MP, on the Princeton, you are correct, and ditto with the Deluxe Reverb and the Vibrolux Reverb.

The Fender reissues use printed circuits, which are cheaper to make, but when it's repair time, OUCH!!!

the 90s Fender Pro Juniors work good for Harp but I found the more recent models do not work for Harp at all no matter what you do with them unless you use a Kinder AFB+ pedal but then its a trebly brittle sound

Some of it may have to do with the brand of tubes being used because, as I said before, the same tube number from different companies can sound way different yielding obviously different results that has always been true even with the NOS stuff as well because the glass is different, construction, components, etc.

That is the one thing I love about the Pro Junior, just plug in and play with no BS with EQ's and other crap to deal with. Quick set up and break down. OK so that means I'm old school in that regard. LOL

There are a lot of great amps like that. The Mini Meat and Harpgear Double Trouble are a lot like that. Crank it up to the desired volume and dial in the tone you want with only a couple knobs. Life couldn't be easier.

@ Bob that is the only way to play, isn't it?

bluesnut,

sure, i'll give any amp a test drive.

my latest fave is a 63 champ that belongs to scott, but kevins frankenstein admiral is killer too.

kevin is having another bash at che pasta july 17th.

he got flack for too much harp content last time,so this time me and him will be the only harp players.

oh, CaptJon has a harpgear too.

PS oh yeah, larrys 50s tweed deluxe is sweet.
