It seems like an inordinate amount of effort to put on and take off the cover plates over and over while getting just the right gap adjustment--but it also seems inordinately difficult to play bends and OBs with the cover plates off. I usually just set the cover plates in place for testing, but I've seen (and posted here) some videos of someone playing bends and OBs on a harmonica without cover plates, so it must be possible.

Do any of you folks do this? Is it worth spending the time and effort to learn how to do it, and if so, any tips?

The reeds always catch my whisker hairs and jam. They only fit a few models of harps, but I've heard someone suggest a snap on cover from TurboHarp as a good solution for while you are doing reed work.

I actually think that the ob and od are actually easier to play without coverplates...

This could be due to the different lip positioning.. or because the harp simply has to be gapped differently with coverplates on... (?)

eharp: I definitely was, and I appreciate your suggestion. I'm going to try it.

Nac: just ordered a set of Turbo-Lids. I was curious about them anyway.

Buddha: Cool! So do you recommend spending time practicing with the cover plates off?

GH: I don't understand what you're saying about the harp being gapped differently with the cover plates on. I assume you're not talking about reed gapping here.
