Hi all, I want to learn how to tune my harps and was wondering if there are any vids you know of that explain this process and show how its done with sound clips etc. I have a tuner but really dont understand what I am doing and what I am aiming for especially JI. Paul Kingley tuned a C harp Marine Band for me a while ago and it is still this one I prefer to play the most as it sounds more old school. I am an old school type of player and prefer this to the newer stuff. Are there any volunteers that could show us the correct way to go. Hey Paul how about doing afew vids to show us?
I dont have the confidence to tune just yet and need a little push is all and I bet there are a few guys out there that are thinking the same as me.
Videos really won't help because tuning requires listening far more than the visual aspect and also learning how to use the LIGHTEST breath force you can physically manage and listening to the chords and how much they are wavering/beating and once that stops, then it's done.
Again, videos are not really gonna be a good teacher for this. Before you start practicing this, get a cheapo, crappy harp you could give a rat's butt about first before you start doing it on your regular stuff. I originally needed a tuner, but I've been doing it so much and know what to listen for (this is something that a video CAN'T teach you at all) that for the last 20 years, my ears have become well trained so that I do it like in the factory and do it totally by ear. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
I recommend Richard Sleigh's book: "Straighten up and tune right". You can buy if from him directly from his website - 27$ shipped to your door. It's a quick read but it's all there - from the man himself.
You can also get some interesting downloads from him if you join his mailing list. His Marine Band Field Spotting guide has a very useful reed replacement chart at then end.
