I've been experimenting with installing server-side software--so I put up this new forum. I don't think the world needs another forum for harp--so I'm just experimenting here.
It occurred to me that the readers here are quite expert on more than just playing harp--they have also educated themselves on the subject of forums.
If you have a moment, I would really appreciate it if you took a look at my experiment and just see what it lacks--or what it has that annoys you--whatever. This site will probably go away soon--or morph into something else.
If you want to join the forum, you can leave messages there to help me with this experiment--or just post your reactions here. . .

Well what ever you are doing it doesn't make it through the work filters! :( MBH does somehow. Could be flash content.

It looks fine. It seems to run fine. It doesn't have a million different sections which can make things complicated to first visit.
It seems to have all the things that you would expect.
Now all you need is to build up a community of people who are passionate about the harmonica and are willing to and/or find pleasure in participating in your forum. That's the hard part no matter what forum software you use...
It's also missing a harp logo...
Cheers!

To be honest, I don't find it totally fair to use this harmonica forum to advertise for an other harmonica forum.
Still, I wish you good luck.

This isn't advertising--it's a simple request from a member of this forum who has almost 1300 posts here. I was just curious about how others would like this software I installed, and I gave it a face that would make it possibly interesting to members of this forum.
Thanks to everybody who responded. . .

It looks pretty standard. I'm not a fan of the light blue color scheme. It gets used too often. Other than that, it looks good.

Running a forum is hard as I've found out with the Elk River forum. The hardest part will be getting sustainment. You have to post constantly, especially at first and keep the conversations moving.

Yes. The ElkRiver man is correct. You need to stimulate the community with provocative postings on race, gender, weight, and whether you have been misunderstood.

@oldwailer:
Looks good.
AFAIK, SMF is an very stable, very secure, very customisable platform.

There are a lot of things about SMF I don't like, but I've stuck with it. I try some of the different colors and whatnot for the Elk RIver forum, and on most of them, you can't even read the words because there is no contrast. I have yet to figure out how to get pictures to come up on the main forum pages. Other than that, it's been OK.

My only recommendation is that you change the name to:
NewWailers Old Harp Forum.

@Honkin--good idea! I'm still working on it--changing the colors is harder than I thought--and I'd really like to get the name to change--this server-side software is difficult to control!
I started this thing as an experiment--but the response has been pretty good--so I'll probably leave it up for a while to see how it shakes out. . .

Just to let you know--I killed the forum by accident--I'll have it up again soon--but, in trying to get a decent color scheme going, I seem to have killed it for now--
Thanks everybody for helping me out by looking at this--sorry if I created a problem for anybody. . .

hmm... it still works for me.
I have to say I really like the devision of sub-forums/rooms, makes more sense of any of a harp forum I've seen to date.
To the color scheme. I know you've just changed from a pretty standard blue-ish theme, to your inferno black and dark red. The problem I see with that is that the strong contrasts could be kind of tireing for the eyes.
If you want to stick to such a high contrast I'd reduce the dominance of the dark areas a little...

Be careful with color schemes. There are certain schemes that cause problems for people with color blindness, although I don't know what they are off the top of my head. I've had problems with clutter on some sites. I have something related to dyslexia. I lose my place if lines of text are too long or there is a lot of clutter. I didn't know what the heck Nastyolddog was saying until someone convinced him to use paragraphs!!! (I'm glad they did. I love his posts.)

Earlounge, lot's of people have this or that. My friend was really into making websites a couple years ago. He was always prattling on about a certain standards protocol and complaining most sites didn't adhere to it.
