I noticed there is a powerful lot of British blokes on this forum. Any other Last of the Summer Wine fans? I've watched it on W.Va. Public Television for years. Every Saturday morning, everything stops except the video recorder when LOTS is on.

I used to enjoy it about 30 years ago when it first started, but haven't watched it for years.
there is a limit to the number of times I find it funny to see three old men going down hill in a bath/sidecar/wheelbarrow etc.

I often play the tune at open mics though. :^)

That's the second reference you've made to Brit TV Dave. Yesterday you mentioned the Hyacinth Bucket one. Don't you have any decent US programs over there?

Hey ERH,

It is a classic with actors that are now very old or passed on as is the case with dear old Compo.

As Lumpy says the theme tune is harmonica played by Harry Pitch on Chrom. He has been at the last few Festivals in Bristol, great player, wears a tux.

Nora Batty, what a character, you are seeing a masterclass of British acting talent on view. Great script especially in the early days, it is the longest running comedy series now being finished this year 2010

Very gentle comedy with a feel good factor, glad you enjoy it.

Remember we pay £120 a year for a television licence which funds all the radio and tv of the BBC with NO adverts!!!!

Several years ago, I told the cable company to go to you know where and I threw up an antenna. I watched a lot of public television, which has no adverts, either. My wife sneaked around and got cable about two months ago, my Saturday morning ritual remains unchanged.

I watch, in order:
Open All Hours
Keeping Up Appearances
AS Time Goes By (I usually fix breakfast or something while it's on and otherwise get prepared for watching LOTS.)
Last of the Summer Wine.

Even when I was a kid, I watched the British comedies every Sat. morn. Back then, I watched "Are You Being Served" quite a bit. Unfortunately, they don't show that one anymore.

ERH@ Have you tried Dad's Army? Sounds like that would be just your cup of tea.

Tooka, no, I'm not sure I've heard of Dad's Army. What is it? It might be on the BBC America.

ERH@ This clip should give you a flavour of what it's all about. When our young men were at war, an army of old men formed a force to repel any enemy invasion. This is all about them.

don't tell him Pike

I didn't realise LOTS theme was on Chrom, I play it on diatonic, probably by busking it and not play as it should be. Must see if I can find a chart for it, anyine know if it has a title. [other than theme from las of summer wine]?

It's just called "Last of the Summer Wine." THere are multiple lyrics. Bill Owen wrote some once, then when Bill Owen died, they had a chorus singing lyrics to the song at Compo's Funeral... I know that only from watching Youtube, WV Public Television only shows episodes from the first one, Funerals and Fish, up to about 1993.

It's the most easy thing ever to play on solo tuning.

I once heard Harry Pitch who plays the chromatic theme tune to the series discussing his harmonica part on the radio. His comment was that the tune had been very good to him. It had bought him his house, a boat and put his kids through college.

I love the Foggy character, but Seymour is my favorite of the trio's leaders.

Down the hill in a bathtub, just for lumpy, and those who haven't seen the show, the harmonica is usually that prominent in the background music.
