I've just returned after four days cruising in a small boat on the Norfolk Broads here in the UK. I didn't play harp for those four days because No1. My ship mates wouldn't have appreciated the racket, and No2. If they did appreciate the racket they wouldn't have been able to pay me. Business is business.

However, on the last day I ate a whole tube of Salt and Vinegar Flavoured Pringles Crisps. When I got home last night, dying to break open the harps and blast away, I found my lips were peeling (big time) lumps the size of cornflakes were just rolling off.

So, just a word of warning folks. If you've got a big one coming up, lay off the salt and vinegar flavoured crisps and keep your lips puckered up and in good order.

thanks for the warning. Maybe one could use lip balm for a few hours after having had tese chips. Or drink lot's of water.

Not sure that would help Heart2Harp. Once you've had the salt and vinegar on your lips for any length of time, the damage has been done. The annoying thing is I knew my lips were taking a pounding but those crisps are so moorish, I couldn't stop myself.

I didn't think they would lead to a full peel though. My big error.

Having to play (try) a "D" Feadog Pro Irish Whistle till the lips have toughened up.

Avoid heavily salted popcorn too. Kettle corn is fine though. I know salt will do it. Do we have any opinions of vinegar alone? Salad dressing?

Dairy will phlegm you up. After anything with lots of sugar you should rinse your mouth before playing or your harp will get all sticky. Rinse after crunchy stuff too. It tends to get stuck in reeds.

Avoid lemons if you need to whistle!

Tookatooka,
I LOVE salt and vinegar chips. Because of my blood pressure, I can only sneak them and I rarely do, because my blood pressure gets up and I get headaches.
Thus, I crave them constantly and cannot stand idle while they are unjustly blamed.
Do you think this dry, cracked lip problem might have had anything to do with you being out on boat in the air and sun for FOUR DAYS!

BTW, most of what I know about the Broads comes from an episode of "Keeping Up Appearances."

No sorry Dave. We didn't have much sun. It wascold wet and miserable most of the time although it did tend to brighten up at night to give a decent sunset. It was the crisps. Believe me.

I read this as not so much a problem with the salt and vinegar as it is a problem with eating the entire tube. :O

Scrapboss@ Of course you are right. I gave up smoking beginning of April and compensate by eating. Hope it is only temporary.

Hi Ant, Bingo we must have posted at about the same time.

Yeah the smoking is going good but every now and then I could kill for a fat rolly.

DAMN! Was hoping to get back on the harp today but it looks as though the next layer down is beginning to peel now. WTF! I think there should be a harp health warning on those crisps.

gene, I'll get back to you as soon as I finish combing out my beard...

Tooka, every time you get the urge to put something in your mouth, pick up your harp. If that doesn't work, dip it in chocolate sauce. :)

They started disposing of radioactive waste in containers disguised as Pringles cans a few years ago. I'm sure you didn't get one, as they were supposed to be sent away on a boat somewhere...
