I just tried this. It works WAY better than purple kaboom, with much less work. The brass looks brand new, all it took was a wet toothbush and oxcilic acid.
I'm not too worried about it, but I'm thinking I'll scrub again with soap and water to remove trace amounts that may be left.
Thanks for the tip, Todd.

You are welcome. HarveyHarp taught me this, via Joe Spiers, I believe. Yes, it's not harmful but do rinse it clean, for no reason other than you don't want to suck in powder if you don't have to. It rinses easily enough. ----------

I did not get this from Joe Spiers, though he might do it. I was forced to use it to clean up some very stubborn dirty harps that I worked on for one of my club members. It works well, but in my opinion, the tuning needs to be checked afterwards. After all, it is an abrasive, and it will affect tuning slighty. Of course, you should check tuning anytime you do anything to reeds, such as curvature, gapping etc.
I talked to the Barkeepers Friends tech line to make sure there was nothing in there that couild harm people, and they suggested that I wash them in soap and water afterwards, like you would cooking utensils.

Lemon juice or white vinegar and table salt will shine your brass like no tomorrow. It's definitely safe to ingest too! Not to mention cheap as hell. I like BKF, and I use it on my sinks and such, but I'm not sure I'de use it on my harps. Not so much b/c of the oxalic acid, but b/c of the abrasiveness, though I sure would not want to breath in any bad fumes. The vinegar/salt thing works so well for me anyway, that I don't need another product!
Cheers,
