Adam was on his game. His groove had the people making noise. The locals were diggin it too.
His playing on the high end of the harp really stood out to me. I thought "Sunshine" was the bomb too.

To me, playing with someone is so much better than playing alone. I love the interplay between musicians. Playing alone is not the same. It's kinda like, well, you know.... ---------- Tin Lizzie

I have been a 1 man band on and off over the past 35 years. The past 6 years or so, it has pretty much been as a 1 man band. There are pros and cons to both playing with others and doing it all on your own. The plus to the one man band, and there seems to be as many definitions of what a 1 man band is as there are definitions as to what is blues, is that you are free on lots of levels- keeping wierd times, chord changes, rounding up/keeping a band, traveling expenses are way down, and you can often get gigs in places that wouldn't hire a full band. The advantages to playing with others is more widely know so I won't go into them. I have experienced both sides and it depends on where you are at with everything. At points in my career I would never think of doing the 1 man band, but today, I really am not interested in having a real band. I have a drummer and bassist I love to play with, but I left them in Ca. I enjoy sitting in with a band, but the whole concept of being in a real band doesn't fit my life right now. I enjoy my privacy and love traveling with my wife and dogs to gigs. We sold our bus last year. I miss it. That was living- playing clubs and festivals around the country in a 40 foot diesel bus with all the luxuries of home. I love driving those things and am going to get another one when I retire.
The downside of the 1 man band that most people could relate to is - you have to custom make most of the drum gear. You can't go to guitar center and buy stuff off the shelf that will work. There is some stuff out there, but I prefer to tinker. I have and continue to experiment with things. It is a new frontier so to speak. If you are creative, it can be lots of fun. THe hardest part is you have to master a bunch of different instruments and then play them together. Individually, you can do things that you can't when playing them all at once. the brain has its limits. Personally, I love the limits. It puts one in a real position to define your style. Like jimmy reed for instance. His sound was pretty much the same on every song, but his little changes made them sound vastly different.
You have to create that vibe with the 1 man band. Most 1 man bands make a big mistake IMO- they try to fill up way too much space, kind of like overcompensating for not having a real band behind them. 9 out of 10 1 man bands will play fast, loud, and frantic, all night. That to me, makes most of them 1 dimensional and like the stigma with harp players all being noise makers, the 1 man band doesn't get immediate respect in the musical community. Most can't do a solid couple hours of music either. These things are obstacles that I have encountered when booking gigs. You have to educate and sometimes reteach the music community that you can do a whole night of music and keep people captivated.
My goal with the 1 man band is to sound like a real band that has a definite style and groove. Anyway, anytime I see a 1 man band post I am excited to jump on board. I recorded a bunch of harp/piano/drums/vocals 1 man band songs last night that I am excited about. I never really have spent any real time with the keys. Mostly I noodled on them before gigs in clubs that had one onstage. Since going to the 1 man band, I bought a keyboard and have been learning how to play it as I go along. They are at the link below. I loved the one man bands. Adam's playing on Sunshine may have been his best playing all weekend. He really let it all out - and then of course he went from rock star to dad in about a minute! Ahh kids, the greatest ground circuit there is.
If there is any video of Adam's one man band please post it.
