Anyone have any suggestions for a really cheap recorder? I was jamming with some friends at our song writer's circle and all of the sudden we had something. The last portable recording device I bought was a full sized Walkman with a tape deck in it. What's the state of the pocket sized, somebody-quick-record-this-so-we-all-remember-what-we-were-doing-next-time-we-get-together world these days?

We've been using this little digital recorder that seems to have some sort of big condensor mic/s on the top of it which works a treat! Saw one in the shop the other day but it was $599 Aus!!!

If you only want to go for audio recordings, i can recommend the "Zoom H2 Handy Portable Stereo Recorder".
It's about 150 USD. Really Handy.

+1 on the Zoom H2. I've gotten some pretty decent recordings from it.

Olympus makes some good miniature voice recorders that also store and play mp3s. i just recently picked up a WS-510M to bring to HCH, and it's a nice little piece of equipment. About the size of small cell phone, and over a thousand hours of recording time. They're currently running around $100 US on Amazon. The sound quality is not a good as one of the more expensive digital music recorders, but good enough for voice and music "notes," and probably for YouTube as well. They come equipped to record in WMA format, but there's a free firmware update available that allows you to record directly in mp3 format.

Tascam DR-1, easier to use than the H2, more features, and the sound quality is better. I bought a DR-1 to replace my H2. Everything about it is better than the H2

The DR-07 is a great recorder for the money ($134 Amazon)

There's a new one out that's getting good reviews ($147 Amazon)

Do any of these recorders mentioned have the ability to do any multitrack recording?

I'd like to find something that was cheap, and allowed me to do a quick laydown (either myself or some unsuspecting guitarist) then readily layer a lead over it.

I had a cassette four-track from Tascam that I used for years. It was simple simple, and perfect for a Luddite such as myself.

Anyone?

Bueller?

Here's a much cheaper option for a recorder, but it's totally analog:

Todd, I've already got one of those, and maybe it's just me, but the sound is terrible.

Zooom H2 can do 4track recordings. It comes w/ a bunch of accessories that everybody else chages extra for.. Its shirt pocket sized and makes excellent recordings

I like the specs of that H2, and for a 150 buck handheld recorder with at-least-passable digital audio that also multitracks? That's a must-have for me soon.

I'd like to know which recorder Buddha uses to capture his recordings he often posts on the forum.

Silvertone, thanks for the info. I just ordered an H2 based on that tidbit. Now, perhaps one day I'll learn to translate what comes out of my harp to an online posting.

@toddlgreene - Here is a sample from my Zoom H2. It was placed about two feet from the speaker on my tweed Champ clone.

Hey Joe, That was some nice playing with a catchy little groove! Your amp tone is great too, thats just the tone I like. What mic did you use for that recording?

Joe_l-It records with great clarity, and i couldn't hear any distortion from the condensor mics being overloaded-and sweet playing, by the way! That thing does a nice job! How much trial and error before you got it positioned right, if at all?

@markdc70 - An Astatic JT-30 Roadhouse with a Kobitone element.

@toddlgreene - No trial and error. The Zoom H2 has three sensitivity settings. I always use the Low setting when recording anything that is amplified.

I bought a second hand Minidisc recorder and a small stereo mic.
The sound is good. it can also be plugged into a mixing desk if required.
the drawback on the one I got is that I can't dowmload track I have to plug it into the PC and play them in realtime to record them into Audacity to edit them. Had I realised that at the tiem I'd have looked for a model with a 'data out' of some sort.

@Nacoran. You did say cheap and it seems no-one has taken that on board. However I can recommend this little digital device http://www.ciao.co.uk/Productinformation/Mikomi_ICR_207__6722558

I got one for £6.95. I just needed it to capture spur of the moment recordings which I'd work on later. I wasn't expecting good quality sound, just a simple cheap way to capture ideas for future work. It's fine.
Got a big memory approx 15 hours recording and takes two AAA cells. Built in mic. Etc, etc.

Tooka, thanks. Yeah, cheap is relative. I'm trying to put together a better sound recording set up for home but my main focus for this post was just to fill a need to be able to record something well enough so we can go back to it later and record it right and remember who was doing what. Anything I spend on that comes out of the budget for the better home recording set up though, so your suggestion is definitely very welcome. Two bad it doesn't take AA's. I have a ton of rechargeables that I use to rotate through some other devices around the house.

I have a SANSA clip mp3 player with 15 hrs recording USB2 downloadable and rechargeable about 35 USD. Quality seems pretty good, much better than ordinary voice recorders. Of course no external mic. I often record harp while travelling to replay later to remember what I did.

For all my harp video and audio recording I sprung about $250 for a netbook computer. Works great for me. They are probably $200 or less now. I plug in a cheap external mic and away I go. With some free software you can do multitrack recording, looping, etc. And no need to move files to from another device to your computer afterwards.
