Hi all,

some of you guys wanted me to keep you posted about my ''street performer'' initiation. Well I did it today. I picked a busy spot in downtown Ottawa (Canada) and started blowing and sucking on that harp. I played Crawling Kingsnake, Mannish Boy and some instrumental boogie stuff I've been making up. Half an hour into it I was told that I had to register for a street performer's permit..GGRRRR. Oh well, at least in that half hour I made the equivalent of 10.30 USD

Thanks to everyone who encouraged me in my earlier post

Mathieu

That's not jump change! How do you register as a street performer?

Outstanding Mathieu. You made much better progress than me and I kind of envy you. But I also admire your courage and determination. I'm from Toronto. If I ever go up to Ottawa, I'd like to blow some harp with you man.
p.s. Damn, you need a permit for everything in Canada. dogs, cats, hot dog... do you know how much does the permit cost? and for how long?

@nacoran - You don't register to become a Blues street performer that would take the fun away.
If you sound good the cops should leave you alone if not you would just have to keep your eyes peeled & travel light

Go to City Hall and get a permit, just like you would with any sort of license.

Congrats

Do it again. It will not only satisfy your sole, It will build your chops and get you in touch with how to connect with the average Joe.

I bet the licence cost $10.30usd :)

Actually, the license is...are you ready?...200 canadian dollars!!!!! (around 195 US Dollars). The first 50$ is just to be licensed as a street performer and the next 150$ is a yearly pass to play in the downtown market (which is where most people hang out so that's where you want to play).

I'm thinking of paying it though. This is a top notch ''swim or drawn'' type of learning opportunity I don't want to pass. I mean it's just me and my harp and if it goes wrong it's all on me. I love this type of challenge.

I bet that $200 annual fee weeds out a lot of competition. I agree it's a challange and an oppertunity to grow. But it is NOT a "no brainer" money-maker. I admire you for considering going on.

@ Jim Rumbaugh

I feel bad for those guys that played for their daily meal though...these guys were out there rain or shine trying to make a buck. I guess the city weeded them out too.

Congrats! $200 a year for your own venue, public practice sessions, confidence building lessons, etc. Pretty good deal.

@OzarkRich:

yeah when you look at it this way, it is a pretty good deal! Although keep in mind this is Canada so it's more of a 6 to 7 months stretch...'cause the rest of the year it snows and it's damn cold :-)

Congratulations bra!

Where do you perform? the Bymarket?

I don't know about street buskers, but TTC buskers in Toronto have to audition. I find that amusing.

@ oda:

Yeah it's in the Bymarket. Luckily, no auditions are necessary.

Heart2Heart- Your looking at those winter months the wrong way. You just need to learn to adapt. Put some bells on your snowshoes.
