I posted about some of this on Facebook so my apologies for this bit of older news.

On friday, I got a call from a producer at The Learning Channel, they were looking for a harmonica player to be featured in an episode for a new reality show TLC will be airing this weekend.

What I was told on friday about the show wasn't exactly right. Maybe they were fucking with my head or they were talking about a different show. I don't know.

This particular episode features a 148yr old cane with a harmonica built in the handle. We were at an auction house in Phoenix where there must have been at least 300 people from the public there.

The guy bidding for the cane was an actor. I didn't stay for the auction of the cane... Anyway, he says he wants to bid on the cane and asked the auctioneer if it works. He says they bought in a professional harmonica player to prove that it plays perfectly.

Enter Buddha sporting cowboy boots, jeans, a blue plaid denim shirt and a straw hat...I look slick as shit!! The Auctioneer hands me the cane and says "Play it Boy". Then he gets the audience into a ridiculous clapping tempo. The arrangement of what I was going to play, the arrangement I worked on for three hours while I wait, was out the window because now, I can only play OH SUZANNAH as fast as I can. What a joy!

Gimmie a Fuckin break.

I'm a guy that works to push the harmonica into places it's never been before. I'm progressive, innovative and I'm stretching the boundaries of the harmonica with every thought and here I am wear a goofy straw hat, boots that don't fit and a denim jacket. All I needed was a mustache and a real cowboy hat and I would be the next Marlboro man.

But no, at that moment in time I was the bizzaro Marlboro Man with the straw hat, lip stick, eyeliner and white powder on my face. And I'm going to be in front of tens of millions of viewers playing OH SUZANNA!

I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining. I was treated very nicely. There were two personal assistants. Not for me alone but for all of the other actors etc too. At one point, I was sitting in the audience and this girl comes up to me and asks if I want anything, food, drink etc... I said Coffee would nice. Then the guy next to me says "I would like coffee too." The girl said "it's for him only" and he get this puzzled look on him face. I turn to him and say "do you think I walk around looking like this all the time?"

Next time go up to the podium, gently rap the cane against it, and then wave it, conductor wand like, at a more suitable tempo.

That really sucks, but at least it's a good story to tell. Was the cane cool looking? Did it play well? It's actually kind of cool to get to play something that old. Was it even Richter tuned?

id wager that theres plenty of chaps here, though the getup is entirely questionable, that wouldve traded shoes (or overalls for that matter *chuckle*) with you in an instant to be put in front of a camera with the knowledge that it was intended for tens of millions of viewers. Ill also bet that it leads to other things (mileage may vary) once realized that you are capable of so much more, musically speaking. It was a door that you put your foot in, and for whatever reasons, any good, open door i can get my foot in? im keeping it there...
