I have recently put my hands on some marble and decided i might try to make a comb for one of my big rivers. Ive been making my own wood combs for a whlie now and thought it would be cool. has anyone here played a stone harp and if so, how did it play?

It sounds like a fun project. I was pretty sure I saw something about stone combs before. I did a Google search and there was someone talking about the possibilities on harpl and a couple other sites.
The non-harpl sites returned warnings of malware though so I didn't click through. The harpl guys were worried about making sure it was non-toxic. I'm pretty sure marble would fall into that category.
I'd imagine they'd feel cold. I have an aluminum comb and it kind of feels different at first, but once I got used to it it is great.
There are always great debates about how much the comb changes tone. It's close enough so a lot of people argue there is no difference. If you use good reeds it should sound good. It could also really look cool. There are some composite materials that some of the customizers use.
Let us know how it turns out.

Chris Reynolds (Builderofstuff.com) builds combs out of many different materials, including something called fantasy marble?

Kyzer- It warms up eventually, but it takes a while to feel warm. It must have a high specific heat.

I heard of using soapstone. It's relatively easy to carve and once you're done you can seal it with varnish.
I have some nice soapstone rocks, but didn't start the project yet.
To the whole material/sound difference discussion. I heard that it's not about the material but the surface. Rough wood sounds a little softer, flat plastic or glas somewhat clearer.

GH- After I read the harpl articles I did some searching. The first thing I thought of was soapstone, but what I read about it's toxicity had me a little worried.

But if you play with a marble comb...won't you always be a little "stoned" ? ---------- Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art. - Charlie Parker
