I was listening to Butterfield last night and was admiring his awesome tone. He was a player that used explosive coughs (presumably to expel excess air). Our host Adam also does this. With Butterfield, I think they sounded extraneous to his playing. In some of Adam's videos he uses the cough as part of the percussive groove, and talks about them that way, in addition.

However, I have never felt the need for this technique.

How about you all? Is this something you must do? Choose to do? Do for effect? Do you think it adds to or detracts from a performance? I hate to ask, but does tongue blocking vs. lip pursing make have any bearing on this issue?

Never do it. I don't care for the sound.

I think any technique is worth learning, then if you find somewhere it works, use it. It's not like you have to commit to using it in every song.

I do it a lot, but not on purpose. It is what it is. Mad Cat does some awesome stuff with coughs, etc! One thing I do do on purpose is singing a harmony note with the note I am playing...usually on blow octaves.

i do it too...where it fits. where it doesnt fit, i have to work very hard to still get that exhale while not drawing any attention to the fact that im doing so. different tunes call for different exhales, i suppose

to cough or not to cough... THAT is the question!
