Is it just me?

In this version of Nine Below Zero with Sonny Boy Williamson II, the baseline sounds out of pitch. Here is a clip MP3 of Sonny Boy williamson Nine Below Zero SBW did other versions of that song without that sound.

Now, I think it sounds really good. I mean, it makes it sound a little dirty and I think it would sound ordinary if it were perfectly in tune. I thought it was maybe one of those imperfect performances that ends up becoming a classic never-to-be-repeated-again moment.

But then I stumbled upon this (Bharath and his Rhythm Four at the Barfly in Montreal. (feb 27 2007)):

They recreated the sound perfectly. Can someone explain when is done to create this sound?

I can hear what you are talking about but I can't tell you exactly what they are doing. It sounds like one of the chords they are playing doesn't belong in the key.

They're also playing pretty far up the bass which is making it stand out more.

I think we've got 6th & minor 6th chords in here
substituting for some of the Dominant 7ths normally
used.

Too late & I'm not fast enough to make sure now.
Go ahead, prove me wrong!
