What software do you have? If it's windows, you are bound to have a recorder in there somewhere?
If you are on a laptop that probably has a built in mic too.

Let us know more about your system and we may be able to guide you better.

Yo Bro on the back of your PC whith the USB and speaker ect ect panel,
the Pink Microphone socket
it's a smaller one than a Guitar intput,

Ok get a 1.8th to 1/4 inch converter from Radio Shack
Plug your Microphone in play through your speakers,
there is a sound Recorder installed on most computers have a look in your Programs file:)

Nasty- Are your shure (sorry microphone humor) you don't mean a 1/4 to 1/8th converter? I've got a 1/4 inch jack on my computer because I have a special card, but most mic jacks are 1/8th, I think.

I've looked for a USB mic, and there aren't many out there, but like Nasty says, your computer probably has a 1/8th jack. There is one USB mic rated for THX called the Yeti, but it seems to be more for conference calls and such. It does give you some options for different recording modes. It's over $100 though, or I'd get it just to try it out to see how it works.

For software, I think a lot of people on here get the free download of a program called Audacity. It gives you a lot of options. It's open source, so there are a few odd things, like to make an MP3 file you have to download a special codex and install it, but all in all it's a pretty useful little piece of software that lets you do some pretty cool stuff, like recording and mixing multiple tracks. The more RAM your computer has the better Audacity will work. It may have problems doing some more advanced tasks if you have an older computer.

Another option is to buy yourself a Roland Edirol. Then you can take it with you and record gigs, then shunt them up to your computer. Fits in your coat pocket and the sound is unbelievably good..

I use a Zoom Hn4 - though the Olympus LS-10 might have been an even better buy - and 'Reaper', which is a free-to-try (and cheap to register) PC equivalent of (Apple)Logic Studio and is VERY good. USB mics will probably give you multitrack monitor lag unless you get a dedicated soundcard. I plug the Zoom audio out into the soundcard input, using it as a stereo mic with great results.
