I have a couple more questions for you experts and I promise I'll shut up for at least a day or two.

I play Golden Melodys. I was about to order a new one online when I noticed two varities....the GM 542 for $36.99 and the GM 542/20 for 32.95. I had no idea about this. I cannot find any markings on the harps I have. Wonder what the difference is?

Also, I just ordered a Harpgear Double Trouble amp and want to order an SM 57 mic to mic the amp with thru the PA or sometimes maybe play directly thru the amp. The pic of the mic does not show the 1/4 male I am accustomed too. Is this XLR? What do I need to do or buy to plug the mic into the PA or the amp? DO most PAs have hook-ups for both?

On the sm57, it has an xlr male connector. To play thru an amp, you will have to get an impedance transformer, since the mic is low-z, and you need hi-z at your amp. There are different varieties of these transformers as far as connection ends go. It doesn't matter it the transformer is on the mic side or the amp side. I'd get a 15 to 20 ft at the longest xlr to xlr cable and get a xformer that the low-z end is xlr, and the hi-z end is 1/4" and plug it into the amp. Then you'll also be able to use that same cord without the xformer when using the 57 to mic the amp.

There's nothing wrong with asking questions-it's how most of us learn. That, and from our mistakes!

If you are buying the SM57 just to mic an amp to the PA, the xlr connector will work just fine. If you also want to use the mic at some point on the amp THEN you will need the transformer to kick it up to HiZ.

OK...so if I just want to use the SM 57 to mic the amp, all I need is a line with "female" xlr on one end and 1/4 male plug on the other? What connector generally plugs into the PA?

Buy an XLR mic Cable - both ends are XLR. One end is female one end is male. That is what you will need for the PA. Most PA's I have seen take XLR mic connections. If your PA is different you may need a 1/4 inch....just make sure the cable is LoZ.

Isn't an SM 57 dual impedance? If so, I thought that meant you could adjust something inside and bypass the need for a transformer.

Harpdude, if you find the SM 57 to sensitive I found a cheap mic with lower tone its a Ultravoice XM8500 Behringer. I dont know the price because a jam buddy gave it to me. Good luck!

I would just get the XLR-XLR cable, a mic stand and the SM57. Since you already have a made in Mexico Green Bullet (they are NICE) and you are after the chicago blues tone as you mentioned in another thread I would not bother with plugging the SM57 directly into the amp. The microphone you have will most likely fit your needs a lot better.

If you still decide to give it a try you can use this: http://coast2coastmusic.com/cgi-bin/cart/KASHA95UF.html?mv_pc=AFL3296 plus a standard guitar cable to plug the 57 into your amp

@Shanester i I think you're thinking of the 545. It was the forerunner of the 57 and came in several different variations, one of which could be wired hi-z or lo-z.

I have been stunned by the utility of some inexpensive mics by Samson. As a sound guy for a few years now, I have to say i accidentally stumbled onto these. The Samson R21, available for aroud $60 in a three pack really sounds good for harp and makes a good intrument mic as well. I used one for a vocal mic for a while and nobody ever notice.

I used my cut-down mic last night at a jam with my pedal straight into the PA. The audience reaction was every musician's dream so there was no distraction from bad sound.

Just another option to throw out there, since the old mics of the classics were inferior in response to todays mics as strictly PA specs go. Cheaper vocal mics tend to give you more grit sooner, In my experience than the more expensive ones...modern equipment i'm talking about now. My Beta57a vocal mic is superb for straight harp sound, but the samsons are better for dirt.
