Hi all, apologies for my scarcity here. Stuff in real life has kept me away from the board for a few days...

Some weeks ago I posted here that I would interview Son of Dave and some of you submitted questions. Here's the second instalment of the Son of Dave interview, wherein he answers a few questions, and talks a whole bunch of delightfully bizarre shit. "Not a really clever harp player"

Very cool interview--I like this SOD guy more every time I hear him or even just read what he thinks about things. . .

Nobody getting offended at his US-bashing? Ray, you gonna let him get away with this?

I love the guy, and I do kind of think he has half a point, but if half-baked curmudgeonly bellyaching isn't your thing I could see how this would get old fast.

Um, Elwood, did you put some code in your post? My comment box is sitting in the middle of your post.

"I’m interested that you’re not that big on innovation…
SoD: [When it comes to innovation] you just have to judge it musically and sonically and emotionally. Is it doing something new that’s good? The reason that nobody really likes any innovators is that mostly innovators, uh, suck. It creates a bizarre or modern emotion that isn’t timeless. All I’m doing is kind of making it simpler and making it grunt, so I’m not really adding anything modern to it.."

That offends me way more, lol. Who remembers copy-cats? Little Walter isn't timeless? He sure was an innovator. Sugar Blue, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, Howard Levy, Rolling Stones, Police, U2...I could go on all night.

No one remembers the clones. Especially within the harp world.

@Harpninja he doesn't have to say he's innovative because he clearly is so he uses the oppourtunity to distance himself from artists who he sees as doing something different for the sake of it, but i agree its mainly innovators who are remmembered (although i would place the rolling stones and U2 on a list of copycats who will also be remmembered)

@conjob - I'm surprised that you think of the Stones as copycats and not innovators. Who would you say the stones copy exactly with tracks like 'Gimme Shelter', 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' and 'Paint It Black' to name just a few?

The America-bashing might be offensive if it came from an American, but he's from Canada...his comments hold no water. He comes off as a cynical whackjob, but I think that's part of his appeal. I'd still much rather watch him perform than have a conversation with him, unless I too was 'inspired'. I don't listen to music to hear political rants, either, which has soured me on many artists. Just shut up and play!

Thanks for the interview, Elwood-another fine job!

I caught him in Leeds last night, incredible stuff.. it's notable that he is/was a drummer - his rhythm was absolutely on the money all night, hypnotic even.. if you get the chance, go see him...

the early stones were copycats just like 90% if the brit pop/blues scene.

that changed a bit when they wrote their own music.

but inovators......not hardly
