I am very proud to announce that Grammy nominated Kim Wilson is the latest pro to choose a BlowsMeAway wood mic. His choice is a 99H86 CR element in a shell made from Cocobolo, yellowheart and purpleheart. Here's what Kim has to say:

"I've been in show biz a long time so I'm not easily impressed, but when I saw the workmanship that went into this mic I was, literally, "blown away". The attention to detail, the quality and beauty of the materials and, of course, the sound are very impressive indeed. I'm takin' this one on the road! Thanks Greg!

K.W."

WoW. Beautiful mic indeed, I wonder how much would it cost to get something like that? (Btw, I've been very happy with my Ultimate 545)

Hey Greg, nice work. For the benefit of us Canadians here who dream of owning your wares, do you, or do you not ship to Canada?

Yes Greg ships to Canada. I've got several items from him and have been very pleased.
Now if we could only do something about the 2 weeks Canada Customs takes to try out your stuff first before they release it we'd be getting somewhere. :)

Thanks, guys - I feel like a proud papa. Getting an endorsement from Kim means a lot to me.

@bluemoose: no - about 5 coats of nitrocellulose lacquer - same stuff that's used on pianos and guitars. This is only my "semi-gloss" finish. Full gloss hides all the grain, but I needed to get this to Kim before his road trip and didn't have time to do that for him.

@apskarp - My mics are priced based on their options and elements. All of the prices are shown on the wood mics page of my website.

@mr_so&so: Yes, I ship all over the world.

I saw Charlie Musselwhite last night. His mic looked a lot like one of yours. I assume you have made one for him as well. Whatever it was, it sounded fabulous through that Marble Harpmaster.

Hi, Bluefinger - Yes, Charlie has two of my wood mics. He liked the first one so much he wanted a second as backup. One is made from Marblewood, the other is cocobolo with purpleheart and a turquoise inlay ring. Both mics have custom "CM" grills.

He likes the way they look, feel, and sound.

I am proud and privileged to be able to say that I have personally slobbered through one of the Esteemed Mr. Musselwhite's BlowsMeAway mikes.

And, while I realize that he and Greg are essentially neighbors....and/or Greg has some kind of hypnotic spell over him (or, he has photos of Charlie with a sheep); but, as Charlie handed me the mic he casually commented that this mic was one of the best mics he'd ever owned. I don't know what that Heumann dude does for marketing and spin, but you do seem to hear that a lot.

Wilson. Nice work, Greg.

Those mics can actually hang in with Charlie's belt buckle, rings, etc., which is saying a *lot* about how good those mics look. Kim's mic looks great too--

Negative. I'm more or less an adult now.

I was in Haiti for a while. Yuck.

I'm back, but running back and forth 'twixt my San Francisco office, my house in NE California, and a job just east of the Central Sierra Nevada range. Lots of driving. Not much computer time, but oodles of harp and cell phone time.

Thanks again everyone for the nice comments. And thanks to Kim - the wood mic business is booming!

@Htown: Charlie must have been using mic #2 when you saw him. It has a turquoise inlay ring. Here's a pic:

Just so I know when ordering, what is the long grained wood to either side. Not the reddish scaled looking strip in the middle. I like that full wood grain look and color

@ Bluzdude-that is a beautiful grain, isn't it? I am contemplating a lamination of burl and zebrawood for the same reason.

p.s. to Greg, when I'm able to afford one of these, please don't take mine out in the rain...:-)

Or are they waterproof? That would be a great selling point to us sub-sea level dwellers!

Hah! It was drizzling that day. The wood in question is "cocobolo" - one of the prettiest and most popular woods for my mics. It varies from broad to fine grain and darker to lighter but there is always beautiful contrast to the grain. Here are two photos from recent customer mics - that show the variation. I'm working on one now that has some very cool knots and eyes in it too - the grain is NOT always fairly straight.

The first also has purpleheart in the middle, the second was made from a solid block.
