Hi,
I have a new MB Deluxe in D that has a strange habit. When I hit a pre bent 2-hole draw, the note sometimes drifts off into a high pitched squeal. It also happens when I bend it down a hole step and let it come up slowly. Otherwise the harp plays fine. The setup looks good so far ... I can't see any spots where the reed seems to make contact with the plate or sich ... gapping and arching looks fine as well. It happens only at medium air preassure and at the full bend and slightly above.
Any ideas???

Had the exact same issue with a Crossover in D recently - as you say, no visible obstruction or burrs.. it is apparently down to bad reed profiling, and not so easy to eliminate. I was lucky enough to be able to just exchange the harp.. ---------- Myspace

Please complain to Hohner, perhaps they will eventually admit to themselves they have a problem, and correct it.

Have you tried BBQ Bobs idea of tapping the rivet to ensure the base tab of the reed is seating properly on the reedplate?

tookatooka. i gave it the the hammer and nail set to no avail. i shim scraped at invisible obstructions and made absolutely positive my alignment is dead on. i think harpwrench is right. i'm going to replace the offending reed or reeds. it's older and not my harp and i'm glad of that.

I just spoke to the dealer. They ordered a new one and will exchange it so I won't have to tinker with it ...
thanks!

Tookatooka, unfortunately, that won't work for this situation at all. The most likely cause is that the two reed plates aren't aligned properly from the factory and I've seen every brand/manufacturer have this problem at one time or another.
What I'd recommend is that once the cover plates have been removed, loosen all of the reed plate screws, but DO NOT REMOVE THEM at all. Just get it loose enough that there's play with both reed plates and then gently realign them and try until the squealing stops. Once you find where it stops, hold the alignment you have with your fingers and then tighten the screw nearest to the area first, but DO NOT FULLY TIGHTEN THE SCREW AT ALL. Then do the other screws but again, DO NOT FUOL TIGHTEN THE SCREWS AT ALL. Once this has been done with all the screws, then tighten all of them just HAND TIGHT AND NOTHING FURTHER THAN THAT or you will risk overtightening them to the point that you've stripped the threads and you'll cause an air leak from freaking hell.
Often times this does the trick. Sicne this is a new harp, let the factory deal with it.
This often occurs also if you're notorious as many average players tend to be guilty of doing, which is bending all the way to the very floor of the bend. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Thanks, I have tried realigning the plates but it doesn't help any. Since the squeal is strongest somewhere between the half and full bend and since it doesn't occour on any other harp, I think it's not an issue of bending too far. I'm not going to mess with that harp anymore, it'S going back to Hohner.
