Just curious ... how many harps do you bring to a gig? one of each key or just the ones you need for the songs you are going to play? Do you bring a backup for each one?
FWIW ... I have a 14 harp soft case with a LD, LF and a full set from G to F#. The ones I am really playing are Seydels, the other "just in case" harps are mosly old Lee Oscars. Then I have a backup harp for G, Ab, A, Bb, C and D in lose boxes in my hard case. Then there's a 64 Chrom and that's it. It's probably overkill but harps don't take up much space so what the heck ...

13 - all the majors - a low F ---------- Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art. - Charlie Parker

12 or 13 (all keys and sometimes a High G) Plus 8 spares in the most used keys: G, Ab, A, Bb, C, D, Eb, & F. (Never can tell when a reed might jam.) i play quite a bit of 5th position so I regularly use Ab for C minor, otherwise I could be safe w/7 spares.
Personally i don't use low tuned harps or minor tuned harps. I'll play 4th or 5th position for natural minor and 3rd position for dorian minor, all of which work fine for minor key playing.

15 and spares.
I use the 12 "regualar" keys (low F#, though). Then I keep a Low F, Low Eb and an extra in case I have a "new" harp I am playing and it isn't working well.
Then I keep seven back ups in my gig bag. The only harp I don't use on a typical gig is the low F#. Otherwise, every other harp gets played. If I only had the spares, I think I could still pull off a gig. ---------- Mike Fugazzi vocals/harmonica MySpace YouTube Twitter Facebook Album Ordering

It depends on gig. Everyday I have in my bag 12 harp zip case (C, D, Eb, F, LF, G, A, Ab, Bb, Dm, Gm, extra Bb) + cheap swan 64 chromatic + chromonica 48 + 4 harps in my different pockets (LD, E, C, G). 18 harps with me everyday.
If I going to gig I take extra harps. If I know the keys for gig I usually take second soft zip bags with 12 harps I going to play (D, Db, Eb, F, A, Bb, B, LF#, G, Bb, Dm, Gm for my main band) + chromonica deluxe 48 + hering 64. 18 + 14 = 32 harps for most gigs. If I don't know the keys or have tour with more than one gig, I take one more 12-harp zip case with extra harps (LE, LC, LD, C, LEb, F#, E, Db, Am, Am, LEb, Ab). 32 + 12 = 44 harps for tours and jam-gigs and I got all keys I need with one or two spare harps for every key (except B, LE, F# and LF# which I need pretty rare).
I use minor harps only for specific tunes I compose, not for jams, so if i not going to play them, I'd prefer to leave spare minor harps at home and take extra harps in common keys (A, B or other).

As many as I can carry! Let's see, I always have to 7 harp cases filled. That's the major keys (except B and Db which I still don't own) plus my LLF, an extra G, an extra C with the back opened up and one other harp that seems to be playing well at the time. I also take my Musette 24 set (C/C# tremolo) and my first harp, a Blessing C Tremolo (it has a sweeter tone than the Musette). I grab my Chromatic and my Puck just in case. I probably also have whatever harp I had in my pocket. So, 14+2+1+1+1+1=20
My next purchase will probably be a Seydel in B, then maybe a Hering in Db, at which point I'll either have to get a bigger case or move some harps out of the rotation.

And if I win the lottery, I'd get a 3 full set LLF to HA of Seydel Blues Favorites, one in just, one in compromise, and one in equal, oh, and one in Paddy and one in Diminished. And one in Spanish.
And I want someone to customize/retune a set of Pucks, at least from LF to HG for easy carrying. Wait, do I need a set of Spanish tuned in Equal, Just and Compromise too? How much does a pack mule cost to feed? ---------- Nate Facebook

My only answer for that question is that I never count the number, but I know them all like I know all of my ladies!!! lol
On the other hand, longtime LA studio harp great Tommy Morgan used to carry 5 entire sets of the entire Hohner catolog with him to every studio date he ever did, and that included diatonics in all 12 keys, chromatics, chord harps, tremelo, octave and bass harps, and on top of that, they were all in different standard pitch settings and I remember reading an interview of him saying that before he could do a session with this particular piano player whose touch was so heavy that in order for him to play in A440, his keyboards were alll tuned to A448, which is ridiculously high, Tommy had Hohner make him an entire set of harps tuned to A448-A450 so that he could properly match his playing. Damn!!!! ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Looking over at my case- at the moment, 20. Full set - mostly Bushyman Delta Frosts with 5 Seydel 1847 Classics filling in for the five most oft played keys (I do need two more though- just can't afford them at the moment). Have 5 spare Bushmans as backups (for 2nd pos A,C,E,D,G that the 5 Seydels filled), and a Low C and a Low F... and a spare Seydel 1847 in A.

Geez, I looked last night - 2 each of the major keys of A, Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G. No Chromatic no low anything.
I guess that's 14 in all. Some MB's, a few LO's and 2 1847's. Nothing custom or tweaked, all out of the box.
That's it thats all.
Well, that and my Dobro and Guild acoustic and I pretty much cover all things I want to do for a few hours.

I carry about 24 harps to every gig--lots of ones I rarely use, but if a singer wants to play in F#--I'm ready for it.
I would carry more--but I need to get a bigger case. . .

I mostly carry 36-40 with back-ups for the major keys we all use in blues or southern gospel. All because I dont want a reed failing, sticking on me. This includes all 12 keys, cause I play black gospel music, with songs in the key of Eb, C#, F# and Ab. I just put all of them in the case, so then I know they are all in there whatever kind of music I intend to play.
