I got some replacment reed plates from Europe for my G/M's. None of the holes have been tapped out/ threaded? Is this standard? I figured they would come ready to install. If not what size tap do I need to get,and where is the easiest place to get the tap? I plan on reusing the screws. Mike

Mike, don't quote me on this but I think you'll find the screws will be self threading. On the Suzuki plates the holes are just a little smaller than required and the screw cuts the thread as you screw it in. I would have thought the same would apply to the Hohner replacement plates also. ----------

Hi Shredder,
I'm not sure I've got your meanining here. I've never changed a set of plates that you don't just attach with your existing screws. To me, it seems so obvious that I feel I may be missing something. No funnyness intended. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

Note. Just thought, ensure you put the screws back on the correct side. EG if the screw head was originally on the top plate (they usually are) do the same. You'll probably find the holes on the top plate is slightly larger.
@Mick I think Mike was expecting the lower plate holes to be threaded but I'm almost certain the screws are self threading and create a thread as they are screwed in. ----------

I see, tooka. Still, I've never really thought about it. The screws just go in, screw head at the top. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

Hohner MS replacements do come pre-tapped and with all the extra screws and stuff you need. I'm not sure about the handmades since technically they aren't supposed to be "modular". You might just get a totally new, "blank", untapped reedplate for a GM or MB or something... ---------- ------------------

Hi Bro's iv'e only ever replaced Susuki Pro master & Lee Oskar reed Plates tooka is correct the screws or fasteners are self tapping on these Harmonica reed Plates..i often wonderd why the Bloody things where so tight to screw in then my Bro gave me a slap up side my head told me read the instructions,,yep it said they where self tapping threads,,so now when i replace reed plates i do 2 turns forward and one back just like you would tapping larger threads on machinery to clear the thread,,I Find Its much easyer now to install new reed plates now..so i guess it would be the same with Hohner reed plates..Bro's never reuse the old screws to install new reed Plates i think the idea is tapping new threads will help you bed the new plates down to give a better seal between the comb and Plates..i said i think?? thats why but it sounds a resonable explanation..

Hey guy's, Iv'e been a Machinist all my life. The screws that hold the plts. together look to be brass. Brass dosen't self tap it only strips the threads off the screw. I must have a new blank as mentioned above. They came in a plastic sleeve and don't have the new screws like the MS plts. I tryed to see if they would self tap but that was a no go just lke I figured. It only pulled the treads off the end of the screw. I thought maybe Harp Wrench would know or one of the other customizers that deal with Golden Melodies. I'm still hoping one of them may read this post. Mike

I know that Lee Oskar plates are not threaded. On the reed plate pack it states '3 self tapping bolts included.Unthreaded bolt holes ensure an airtight fit.'
Not sure how Lee Oskars react if you take 'em apart for cleaning etc. Do they become loose and leak?
I never have had any problems with Suzuki Bluesmaster, Harpmaster or Sp20s ie I strip en apart and reassemble -no prob!

If you don't overtighten the screws (just tighten up to hand tight and no further), there shouldn't be a problem as long as they're mounted properly back on the comb. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

@ Harpwrench, Thanks for the info. I figured I would just drill and tap them for the smallest American thread I could find. It's going to be interesting to try and find a 1-72 screw and tap. We have some 8's at work but nothing smaller. I do have some dead S/P20's I could rob the screws from though, good idea. Thank's again, Mike

You can find 2-56 bolts and taps at Ace Hardware. That's the smallest they go, and it's just fine for attaching reedplates... ---------- ------------------

@ Aussie-no, the LOs won't leak. Just don't smoke down the nuts or screws. ----------
