Ordered screws to go with the new reed plates and they seem to be to big just like the old screws. I know Hohner changed the screw size over a year ago. So what is the new size I should tell Rockin'Rons to send me.

Thanks
Emile

Hohner now uses Pozidriv #0 screws in them and obviously, the correct screwdriver is going to be a Pazidriv #0 and the one brand you want to get is Wiha. I'm pretty sure Rockin' Ron's sells them. Since the screws are brass, if you do substitute a Phillips head screwdriver, be EXTREMELY careful because you can badly strip the slot that the screwdriver goes into. BTW, they're the exact same screws that Seydels have been using for well over a decade.

I've been making a master data sheet for different harps to go with your temperament sheet Bob. Just made me think... I should probably include all the screw information!

I use info on Andrew Zajac's site as a reference regarding screw sizes:

http://harp.andrewzajac.ca/tools/Screws12pack

You could buy from him, or just use the info as you wish. No affiliation other than the fact that Andrew has been a member of this forum who has provided a lot of useful info.

I threw in the towel, punted, awhile back. Whenever I need a screw it's a 1.6mm x 10mm stainless steel allen head. 50 for ~$7 off ebay on the slow leaky boat from China. McMaster Carr for the tap & allen wrench.

It looks like Andrew has it well covered. That looks like a good route to go.

I'm partial to the Chicago/Post screws (not to be confused with Chicago Post screws?) I wish everyone used them. My biggest gripe with Lee Oskars is their nuts fall off too easily. Harmonica, the dirty phrasing gift that never stops giving...

Every Seydel I've tried uses them, and more and more harps I've seen use them. When I'm dictator of the world my first and only order of business will be to standardize harmonica screws so that they work on any harmonica. Then I'll retire and bask in my adoring fans reflected glory knowing I have done something worthwhile!

Hohner has changed screw sizes at different times over the years not only on diatonics, but on chromatics as well, so this isn't exactly a surprise. Unfortunately, their problem is that they often don't bother making annoucements about this publicly, which has always been a big time gripe for me with them over the years.

Hohner hasn’t used the larger screws in Golden melodies since the 90’s

SuperBee I think you may be right. Still trying to the right screws for my new plate. Rockin' Ron's called me to try to help but I think as Bob said Hohner may have made a change and didn't tell anybody.

Diggs - to the best of my knowledge, the Golden Melodys have used either pins back in the 70's or M1.6 X 10 screws. There seems to be some mention that at one time, perhaps the GM was assembled with M2.0 X 10 screws (like the original Marine Band Special 20). I am not saying that they weren't, but I have never encountered one. Even the 70's version that were built with pins are an easy conversion to the M1.6 X 10 screws. It is helpful to tap the holes in the reed plates, but that is not entirely necessary. You can use a M1.6 screw to self tap by working the screw back and forth in the hole. A stainless steel screw will cut threads in the soft brass reed plates.

Moving on. It is not at all unusual to have screws and holes and threads that just don't seem to match up. It is a common issue for those of us who work on lots of harps. The solution is to have multiple sizes of screws at your disposal. For example, if a M1.6 screw is not catching the threads on the reed plate, then the problem can be easily solved by just moving up to a bigger screw. A US made 1-72 screw is just slightly bigger than a M1.6 so you can tap the plate with a 1-72 tap and use the 1-72 screws. If you don't have 1-72 screws then you can jump up to M2.0 screws and do the same thing. I guess the key is to have the screws and taps. Since I build loads and loads of harps, many or which are Marine Band 1896s on which I replace the nails with screws, I have oodles of screws. Let me know what you need and I will be happy to solve your problem for you. No charge. You're one of the good guys. We have to stick together.

Crazy thought but are the new reedplates threaded?
