This new mute design opens some performance options because it functions with only one hand. It comes in a variety of sizes to respond to the full range of Richter keys.
The one hand design works well with: slide chromatic harmonicas, holding a mic, play a second instrument... There is a Hush model designed specifically for quiet practicing.
Very VERY innovative. I've seen- and experimented briefly- with jars, mugs, cups, cans, many moons ago. I see possibilities here for even just using the off hand for a rhythm device like a shaker or tambourine.
Bravo and good show! ---------- Music and travel destroy prejudice.
Clever. One thought... particularly for people with grip problems, maybe you could install a magnet on that thumb ring to help hold the harmonica in place?
Hi Dave It's incredible to see how the 3D printing technology has allowed so many new and otherwise complex items to manufacture have been solved by this technology. Do you have a web site and price list? Cheers John
Nocoran- Excellent idea! I have actually reached out to a number of disability support groups. My hope was to enable harmonica players to perform hand techniques that may otherwise be extremely difficult or impossible.
I spent some time exploring your idea. The current adjustable thumb strap is a 3M product similar to a double sided industrial strength Velcro. I found that a small piece of adhesive backed Velcro, the fuzzy side, can be stuck onto the bottom cover plate of the harmonica. Bingo! The harmonica sticks to the thumb strap perfectly. It remains stable with very little help from the top index finger. No real pinching strength is required and the harp is adjustable and easy to attach/remove.
So thank you for that! I will be passing this option along and again hope that it helps unlock hand techniques for someone. That would be awesome.
John- I totally agree. I feel fortunate to be able to take advantage of this type of technology. It’s a bit ironic because I’m such an old school wood and metal worker, but I’ve always been a designer and computer geek too. It’s nice to put the CAD skills to good use. This harmonica was one of my first 3D print designs.
---------- It's about time I got around to this.
